The Canon PowerShot V1 Releases Next Month for $900

The Canon PowerShot V1 unveiled at CP+ last month has been fully announced for Canon's global audience, including creators in the United States. While there are no new features or specs to discuss, customers now know when they can get their hands on the PowerShot V1 and for how much.

New Canon RF 20mm f/1.4 L VCM Is Canon’s Widest f/1.4 Lens Ever

The new Canon RF 20mm f/1.4 L VCM is Canon's first-ever 20mm f/1.4 prime lens and only the second 20mm f/1.4 lens available for full-frame mirrorless cameras, joining the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens. The new RF 20mm f/1.4 L VCM joins Canon's three other VCM lenses, each designed with hybrid creators in mind.

Canon RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ Is the First RF Lens With Built-In Power Zoom

Alongside the Canon EOS R50 V camera designed primarily for video applications, Canon debuted a new wide-angle power zoom lens that promises to pair well with the newest EOS R body. The Canon RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens delivers a 22-48mm equivalent focal length range, which Canon says is ideal for cinematic video, live streaming, and vlogging.

Insta360’s Xplorer Kit Adds Photo-Friendly Grip to Ace Pro 2 Action Cam

Not long after announcing it would continue its imaging partnership with Leica, Insta360 debuted a new bundle for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 action camera that features Leica technology. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Xplorer Bundle aims to "transform the 8K AI-powered action camera into the ultimate tool for street photography and urban travel."

Sony Embraces E-Mount Competition Because It Believes Alpha is the Best

Since Sony launched its first full-frame Alpha mirrorless cameras, the original Sony a7 and a7R, in 2013, the mirrorless camera space has changed dramatically. Competition has increased from none to a lot, with Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and others entering the fray in 2018 and 2019. While Sony enjoyed the benefits of being the first across the line, it says it is now embracing today's competitive landscape.

Canon Teases Pair of ‘V’ Cameras

It's turning out to be a surprisingly busy March for new camera announcements. In addition to Sony teasing a new full-frame cinema camera and Fujifilm debuting the GFX100RF, Canon is teasing a pair of new cameras, too.

Close-Up Filters Can Deliver Macro Photography On a Budget

French photographer and YouTube creator Mathieu Stern's latest video discusses the wonderful world of close-up lens filters. Unlike some of Stern's stranger topics, like working with the world's blackest material and capturing travel photos with an infrared digital camera, close-up filters are something nearly every photographer might want to add to their kit.

Magnum is Digitizing Its Color Photo Archive with the Fujifilm GFX 100 II

Magnum Photos is working closely with Fujifilm and MPP (Heritage and Photography Library of Paris / Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie) to digitize Magnum's massive color library archive in Paris. The collection contains approximately 650,000 color slides that have remained mostly untouched and unseen for over 20 years.

Canon Commits to Continuing In-House Sensor Development

Image sensor research and development is notoriously costly, which is why so many manufacturers have opted to work with an existing sensor fabrication company, like Sony Semiconductor, rather than develop their own in-house. Canon has been one of the few exceptions and, according to its executives, that will remain the case.

OM System’s Strategy Might Box It Into No-Man’s Land

OM System isn't willing to sacrifice the performance of its computational photography features in order to increase the resolution of its sensors. That strategy leverages one of the company's competitive advantages, but it also very well makes it difficult for its cameras to appeal to any photographer.

OM System Says It Prioritizes Computational Features Over Megapixels

The biggest benefit of Micro Four Thirds is size: cameras and lenses can be significantly smaller than APS-C or full-frame options. One perceived downside, however, is lower resolution. OM System says it could look into higher-resolution sensors but wouldn’t select them if it meant sacrificing computational performance.
