New York-based photographer Alex John Beck began his series Both Sides Of in order to explore two beliefs. First, that perfectly symmetrical faces are the most beautiful. And second, that one face is representative of one character.
The final photographs, displayed as pairs of symmetrical portraits that show what the subject would look like if you simply mirrored their left or right sides, seem to indicate that neither of these beliefs holds true.
We first introduced you to scientist and photographer Zachary Copfer's 'bacteriographs' back in 2012. A technique that he invented and, as far as we know, only he uses, Bacteriography uses the subject's own bacteria to 'grow' a portrait of them on a petri dish.
Earlier this month, Copfer brought his signature technique to the UK for the first time ever in order to photograph several British celebrities at the UK's Big Bang Fair.
If you're just getting into studio photography, trying to figure out how to light, shoot and set up your shots can be both frustrating and expensive. After all, if you're trying to take high-quality studio shots, you need high end strobes and all sorts of other gear, right?

A young Florida college student photographer is receiving an outpouring of support from the photo community over what may turn out to be one of the more ridiculous copyright lawsuits we've ever run across -- a suit in which the Color Run (you know, "The Best, the Biggest...The Happiest 5K on the Planet") is allegedly suing HIM over a photo of his that they used.
If you type Wedding Photography into Google's Image Search, you'll be greeted by a flood of Pin-able fairytale wedding photographs for the traditional bride who wants the traditional white wedding where everything is perfect and there are no sitcom clap tracks.
But what if you're not the typical couple who wants the typical wedding? What if the best term to describe you is "badass" or simply "different"? Well, that's when you call Allebach Photography, a studio specializing in wedding photography the likes of which you won't see in ye olde bridal magazine... although you will see it in many a tattoo publication.

I'm a firm believer in a healthy respect for gravity, but Russian rooftopping daredevils Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov don't have that problem, and to be honest, they get some spectacular photos because of it. Case in point, check out the video above in which they take you on a POV journey up the second tallest building in the world, where they shot some incredible images.
Our reviewer Colin Peddle is currently the envy of the rest of the PetaPixel staff (including, wouldn't you know it, the Editor in Chief) because he gets to play around with the ZEISS 55mm f/1.4 Otus that has everybody in the photography world salivating.
CP+ is throwing quite a bit of gear news our way, and one find that caught our eye has to do with the immensely popular Fujifilm X100s and its older sibling the X100. According to Patrick over at Fuji Rumors, X100/s users will soon be able to extend their fixed lens' reach to 50mm (35mm equivalent).
The video above was created for Brooklyn couple Monica Nikchemny and Felix Komrash when they got married back in September of 2012. It's only a short preview video (a longer version is included bellow) but you can tell that wedding videography company Visualaz did a great job putting together a memorable wedding video.
So why, then, is the couple suing Visualaz for a whopping $50K?
At Photokina 2012, Sigma released a beautiful video that offered an artsy behind the scenes look inside the company's lens factory in Aizu, Japan. Since then, Sigma's popularity has only increased, and so they've created a sequel to further draw you in to the wonderful world of Sigma.

Lets set aside all the controversy surrounding the 2014 Olympic Games for a moment and just take in the view, because NASA has -- in the way only NASA can -- put the games in perspective for us with this beautiful photo taken while passing over Sochi at night in the International Space Station (ISS).
Here's something crazy to help you shake off the gear fever all of this morning's announcements probably induced. This footage supposedly captures what a GoPro saw after it was dropped from a skydiving airplane, survived that several thousand foot fall, and landed smack in a pigpen where one of Babe's relatives tried to have it for lunch.
The much-rumored Sony a6000 -- the camera that is replacing both the NEX-6 and NEX-7 -- has finally arrived, and it might just steal your heart with its insanely speedy performance and other impressive specs.
Canon wasn't the only one to food our inbox last night, and not even the announcements we were most anxious for. Sony also made some exciting announcements, including a refresh to its Cybershot line that includes three new superzooms and two new point-and-shoots.
Oh, and we should probably mention that one of those superzooms is the world's first bridge camera to feature a 63x optical zoom lens.
Last of the newsworthy announcements out of Canon for CP+ is a refreshed 'tough' or 'rugged' cam that boasts more impressive waterproofing than just about anything else in its class: the Canon PowerShot D30.
Canon's mirrorless attempts haven't gone all that well. But where they've struck out in the mirrorless game, their large-sensor G1 X compact announced at CES 2012 has done quite well. Now, for this year's CP+, Canon has updated the powerful compact by releasing the even more capable G1 X Mark II.
CP+ is underway, which means the gear announcements are about to start coming hard and fast... brace yourselves. First up is Canon, with a new entry-level DSLR that replaces the 2011 T3 as the stripped down Rebel for the budget conscious shooter who has their heart set on staying away from mirrorless cameras: The Canon Rebel T5.
Not having a dedicated film scanner is no barrier to being able to digitize your slides, but DIY methods we've presented in the past tend to be time-consuming. Even if it's an easy DIY solution that will let you, say, use your desktop all-in-one to scan them in, it'll still take you a long time to digitize the hundreds of slides you might have lying around.
Well, we've finally stumbled across a rig that fixes this problem: All you need is a modified slide projector, a macro lens, and an intervalometer to digitize hundreds of slides in minutes.
