A Time-Lapse of the Calbuco Volcano Eruption in Chile

Yesterday, the Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted for the first time in over 42 years, sending an enormous ash cloud 7 miles into the air and forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes in a 12 mile radius. A man named Rodrigo Barrera was on the scene with his camera, and he managed to capture the above time-lapse video showing both the beauty and terror of the eruption.

An Incredibly Rare Photo of a Quadruple Rainbow

New Yorker Amanda Curtis was waiting for a train in Long Island, New York, this past Tuesday when she spotted something incredibly rare: a quadruple rainbow in the sky. She quickly snapped and shared a photo of it online, where it became one of the most talked about images over the past couple of days.

Feds Investigating Incident of US Marshal Smashing Cell Phone Camera

Yesterday we shared a startling video in which a woman who was pointing her smartphone camera at a group of law enforcement officers had the device snatched from her hand, smashed against the ground, and then kicked back at her. It turns out the man who did it is a deputy U.S. marshal, and the U.S. Marshals Service says it's now investigating the incident.

Portraits of Afghan Girls Who Are Empowered by Skateboarding

Skateistan is a non-profit organization that seeks to connect youth to education by first introducing them to skateboarding. After hearing that a large percentage of the participants in Kabul, Afghanistan, are girls, photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson decided to shoot portraits that show how the sport is empowering young Afghan girls in a country where girls are generally forbidden from even riding bikes.

This Picture Shows How Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Affect Your Photos

Here's a helpful little infographic that has been floating around the Web. It's a simple look at how the "exposure triangle" -- aperture, shutter speed, and ISO -- affect the outcome of photographs. It's not a complete picture, of course (for example, it doesn't say why you'd ever choose a higher ISO versus a lower one), but it could be a nice illustrated reference for those just starting out in photography.

Life Lessons Shared with Double Exposure Photos

Florida-based photographer Brandon Kidwell has been working on a lifelong project called "Wisdom for My Children." It's a series of beautiful double exposure photos that resulted from real experiences Kidwell went through while raising his kids. Each of the images "is symbolic of some piece of advice that I gave them," he writes.

This is What a 343x Camera Zoom Would Be Like

In addition to the megapixel war, major camera companies are also engaging in a new superzoom war with their latest compact cameras. We recently shared the incredible reach of the 64x zoom on the Canon SX60 and the 83x zoom on the Nikon P900. If we ever somehow get to the point of 343x zooms appearing in cameras, the video above shows what that would be like.

Photographer Catches Drone at Last Moment Before It Falls Into the Sea

Photographer Ryan Chatfield was recently flying his camera drone over a beach when it unexpectedly ran out of battery power and began an automatic and uncontrolled descent. Seeing his drone falling slowly into the ocean, Chatfield sprinted across the beach, over some rocks, and managed to catch the drone at the last moment before it hit the surface of the water.

Woman Pointing Smartphone Camera at Police Has It Snatched and Smashed

Here's a video that's causing an uproar among those who care about photographers' rights. It's a 53-second clip recorded on April 19th that shows an encounter one woman had with police officers on a residential sidewalk in South Gate, California. While shooting photos or footage of the assault rifle-equipped officers with her smartphone, one of the men charges her, snatches the camera from her hands, smashes it on the ground, kicks it back at her, and then walks away.

Man Edits His Boring Desk Job Into an Exciting GoPro Camera Commercial

GoPro has found a secret sauce when it comes to creating viral videos of extreme sports that spread like wildfire on the Web. YouTube user Braziliandanny wanted to see what the same style would be like for something more mundane, so he created this brilliant parody by shooting some first-person footage of a boring day at his desk job and then editing the clips together, GoPro commercial-style.

How I Make Money as a Travel Photographer in 2015

Long gone are the days in which being a travel photographer simply meant you shot photography for a certain travel magazine or newspaper. The world isn't that simple anymore, and the level of competition in the photography world has never been higher. But still, I'm fairly sure there are more “travel photographers” on the planet now than there ever were -- just check your Instagram feeds.

The Journey Light Takes from the Sun to Your Camera

Did you know that when you capture a natural light photo, it took those photons about 8.3 minutes to travel from the Sun to your camera? Light feels like it travels quickly for us here on Earth -- so quickly that when we take a picture on our planet, it basically captures things the moment they happen. But in the vast distances of space, it can take light quite a bit of time to get from one place to another.

Man Claims the Sony RX100 III Has Dangerous Levels of Radiation, Is Quickly Shot Down

An Ontario-based vegan who goes by the name Vegetable Police recently released the video above and then began warning photographers with it in online photo forums. He claims that modern digital cameras "output high levels of radiation" and that people should be careful not to have the camera in their hands or against their faces for long periods of time.

A Life-Sized Mannequin Stop Motion Animated with the Help of Strangers

Artist Anton Hecht recently created an unusual stop motion film using photos of a giant life-sized mannequin. Instead of doing the animation themselves, the team invited random strangers who were walking by to help move the dummy around in the public square. The video above is what resulted from their help under careful direction.

A Wedding Photographer Story

She stands in the front of the church; her face carefully set into a pleasant expression, her breathing slow. The knuckles of her right hand, however, are white with rage as she clutches her camera.

Video: The Top 5 New Features in Snapseed 2.0

Snapseed has been one of the most popular mobile photo editing apps in recent years, but Google has been pretty slow in updating the app since acquiring the company back in 2012. That changed earlier this month when Google finally released Snapseed 2.0.

Policeman Returns Woman’s Smartphone by Posting Photos to Her Facebook Page

A police officer in Albury, Australia, did some online photo sharing that drew quite a few chuckles last week. After someone turned in a lost iPhone at his police station, the officer found that the phone didn't have any type of passcode protection. So, to get in touch with the woman who lost it, he started posting humorous photos to her Facebook account.
