Shooting Grassroots-Level Auto Racing

The state of Wisconsin has some of the most storied and exciting short tracks in the United States, and I grew up attending many of them. I watched the greats of ASA and ARTGO battle on tracks like Madison International, Slinger Speedway and WIR. Witnessing wheelmen like Mike Eddy, Lowell Bennett and Matt Kenseth write their legacies. I became addicted to the smell of racing fuel and the sound of a wide open throttle echoing off concrete walls.

How I Built a Film-Digitizing Lightbox

Shooting film is fun and developing film is fun, but tediously scanning film is not fun... so I built myself a film-digitizing light box to be used with a flash and a 1:1 macro lens.

Godox Quietly Launched Cross-Brand TTL and HSS On All Lights

Chinese lighting manufacturer Godox has already released a few products in 2017 that have helped a lot of strobists build lighting kits with a modest investment. Most notably the Godox AD-200 (also sold as the Flashpoint eVolv) has become a crowd favorite for a portable and powerhouse flash.

No, You Can’t Use My Photos On Your Brand’s Instagram For Free

My name is Max Dubler, and I am a professional photographer who has been working full time in downhill skateboarding for the last several years. I am a well-known person within this little niche: I started an influential website with my friends, was on staff for the only downhill magazine since its first issue, have written extensively about downhill skate safety, and have been hired by almost every major downhill skate brand to shoot photos.

Artists Delete Graffiti Photoshop-style with a Painted Illusion

Now this is clever: a group of street artists in Russia have "deleted" the graffiti covering a dumpster and abandoned car with a clever anamorphic illusion. Using paint, the artists covered the graffiti with Photoshop's transparency checkerboard to make it look like someone had cut out the graffiti from a layer in Photoshop.

What My Camera Saw as My Parents Died of Cancer

There is a whole range of feelings that happen with the delivery of bad news. In my case, like many others, knees lock, the heart speeds up and the hairs on my arms get a funny little tingle. My circumstances, however, were a little less expected.

Tunisair Banned Cameras… and Then Lost Mine

On Saturday July 1st, 2017, £600 worth of cameras and equipment were stolen from inside my rucksack, itself packed into a larger suitcase, during a Tunisair flight from Tunis to London Heathrow while they were checked into the hold of the plane.

The First Permanent Photo Exhibition in Space

Dr. Hersh Chadha is a photographer whose work is literally out of this world. Thanks to a collaboration with printing house Duggal Visual Solutions, Chadha's work is now whizzing around the Earth on the International Space Station in a permanent photography exhibition.

Adobe Admits Lightroom is Slow, Says Speeding It Up Is Top Priority

If you're a photographer who's frustrated with Lightroom running slowly (even on a powerful computer), you're not alone -- it's a struggle shared by many, many people who use the program. But hope may be on the horizon. Adobe has just taken the rare step of publicly admitting Lightroom's performance issues and says fixing it is the company's top priority.

When a Panorama Selfie Goes Wrong

The intelligent panorama features on smartphones these days can help capture some pretty neat shots, but they can also produce some very strange results if things go wrong. Mitchell Flann and Erika Gomos were using the Wide Selfie mode on a Samsung Galaxy S7 recently when Gomos sneezed midway through the exposure. The gem above is what resulted.

Learn the Science of Deep Focus and Hyperfocal Distance

Hyperfocal distance is a tool often used by certain genres of photography to render an entire scene in focus. It allows you to capture the foreground through to the background, keeping the whole image sharp. But how does it work? This 12-minute video by Filmmaker IQ looks at the science behind hyperfocal distance.

How to Make a DIY Beauty Dish for Less Than $7

Beauty dishes are great pieces of equipment to have in your lighting arsenal, but they come at a price. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a dish, yet using a cheap shoot-through umbrella can easily produce the same effect, as this 10-minute tutorial by Joe Edelman shows.

Why Photographers Fail

Recently there has been a spate of very sad, and ultimately defeatist articles decrying the “death of photography.” We have no shortage of examples. Seriously.
