Back Button Focus: Everything You Need to Know

In the world of photography, achieving precise focus is a requirement when capturing great images. Whether you're shooting a landscape, a candid portrait, or a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in a fast-paced event, sharp focus can make or break your image.

A deep field image of space showing numerous distant galaxies and stars. An inset zooms in on galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0, highlighted with an arrow, displaying a more detailed view of the small, red galaxy against the dark backdrop of space.

This is the Oldest Known Galaxy Ever Photographed

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been busy peering into the distant reaches of the Universe, otherwise known as the "Cosmic Dawn." This period when the Universe was only a few hundred million years old is a treasure trove of information about how galaxies evolved when the Universe was very young.

Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 XF Review: Fantastic Images at a Budget Price

Viltrox has been busying itself with full-frame Z-mount releases over the last year, building upon the core of its business which has been centered around APS-C. In fact, the last Fuji X-mount release was the "Pro" monikered 27mm f/1.2 that I reviewed in August 2023. The new 56mm f/1.7 sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, retailing at an extremely modest $139. It may be budget in price, but its performance is far from it.

A dynamic seascape showing white waves crashing against dark rocky shorelines. In the background, mountains are bathed in the warm glow of a setting sun under a partly cloudy sky. The scene evokes a sense of power and serenity.

How NOT to Photograph the Ocean

This is the wave that nearly cost me a lot of money. It also taught me a few very valuable lessons that I'd like to share with everyone now, more than ten years after I took this photo.

Two wooden shelves each displaying three cameras. The upper shelf holds a green, red, and blue camera, while the lower shelf also holds a green, red, and blue camera. Each camera is marked with the "LUMIX" brand and is equipped with a large lens. A plant is partially visible on the left side.

Panasonic Used Stock Photos in its Japanese Lumix S9 Marketing

When companies announce and market new cameras, they include sample images. By default, most people would believe these photos are from the latest product, and often, they are. But not always. Panasonic reportedly found itself on the wrong side of this situation last week when it announced the Lumix S9.

A group of four camera lenses is displayed on the left side of the image, labeled as "Anamorphic" and part of the "Micro Four Thirds" system. The right side of the image features the "Micro Four Thirds" logo and text on a gray background.

Lens Maker Sirui Officially Joins Micro Four Thirds System

Panasonic and Olympus -- now OM System -- jointly announced the Micro Four Thirds System standard in 2008. Since then, it has grown to more than 60 members, and it's still growing. Lensmaker Guangdong Sirui Optical Co., Ltd. is the newest member of the standards group.

Farewell Fujinon XF 18-55mm, the Kit Lens Nobody Else Dared to Make

While photographers can still get their hands on the Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS lens, it will no longer be the kit lens of choice for Fujifilm cameras, including for the new Fujifilm X-T50 camera. Supplanted by the new XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR, the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 proved challenging for competitors to match -- not for a lack of ability, but a lack of desire.
