Capturing the Northern Lights in real time only recently became doable, with beautiful videos like this one popping up to show the potential of cameras that can handle high-ISO with low noise. But the folks at OZZO Photography took this idea to new heights... literally. They strapped a Sony a7S II to a drone and shot the northern lights from the air.

A group of 5 friends recently attached 5 cameras to a stratospheric weather balloon and launched it from the Presidio in San Francisco. The rig traveled to 91,470 above Northern California, popped, and then landed over 100 miles away.

The aerial photos and videos it captured are remarkable, showing sweeping views of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area.

The highly-regarded Sony a7S is known to be a monster in low-light situations, a fact demonstrated by a number of short films have used moonlight as the only light source. Those projects are eye-opening, but another way to see just how good the camera's high ISO quality is is to compare it with other well-known cameras.

That's what photographer Tony Northrup does in the short 1-minute comparison above, pitting the a7S against the Nikon D810 and Sony a7 II at various ISOs.

Most Aurora Borealis videos are time-lapses, because cranking the ISO high enough for bright real-time video would normally result in a noisy mess. That, however, was before cameras like the Sony A7s came along.

Award-winning filmmaker Philip Bloom recently got his hands on the new A7s, and as part of his ongoing review of the newest mirrorless full-frame offering from Sony, he put it to the test in low-light to see how it compared to approximately 520 million years of eyeball evolution.

The DxO Mark verdict is finally in for the much-lauded Sony A7s, and as you might expect, it steals the low-light crown from the Nikon Df handily. The problem is, it seems to fall short of its main competition (the other two A7 cameras) in every other category.

Sony’s new A7s camera has been blowing minds when it comes to low-light performance; and, frankly, with a full-frame sensor made up of pixels three times as large as those in the A7r, we expected impressive low-light performance. But it seems low-light performance isn’t the camera’s only forte.

So far, all of the Sony A7s high-ISO tests we've seen -- from your standard static test to some beautiful production-level footage -- have only shown the A7s. There have been no side-by-side comparisons to show if this really is outperforming the competition substantially, or if it only seems like it is.

We’ve shown you the incredible low-light capabilities of Sony’s 4K-capable A7s camera before. But for the most part, the previously-released tests were fairly static and didn't offer much in way of production-level footage.

If you had to summarize this year's NAB Show in Las Vegas in one word, it would probably be "4K."

The NAB (Which stands for National Association of Broadcasters) Show is the world's largest Electronic Media show, and deals largely in video. But, this year, at least one of the announcements had interesting implications for the still photography market.

With only a 12-megapixel sensor and ISO expandable all the way up to 409,600 for both stills and video, everybody knew that that the Sony A7s was going to be a low-light beast... and yet the performance is still taking us by surprise.

Yesterday a short demo video shot at NAB was shared online to a plethora of "oohs" and "aahs," and today, the Sony How To YouTube channel released yet another mind-blowing demonstration of the camera's night-vision capabilities.

Sony announced the full-frame mirrorless A7s earlier this week. And while its 4K video capability was arguably the most touted feature, we were more intrigued by the 12-megapixel sensor that tops out at a ridiculous ISO of 409,600 ... almost half a million ISO ... in a mirrorless camera.

So, how does footage (and therefore images) look at 409,600 on the A7s? Well, Sony commissioned Den Lennie to show it off.

The presentation is over -- although you can still watch the replay for yourself here -- and as rumored, Sony has added one more full-frame mirrorless camera to its Alpha 7 arsenal: The A7s.
