Shooting a Winter Storm Killed My Canon 7D

On July 7th, 2015, wind speeds of over 120km per hour (~75mph) reached the Dutch coastal area. Winds were so extreme that restaurants along the beach were covered in a thick layer of sand, making them look like small sand dunes.

A significant part of my job as a news photographer is covering daily life to, as they say, “feed the beast”. There aren’t always memorable news events happening, so covering things like the weather becomes an important part of your work.

Canon’s 7D Successor to Contain ‘a Lot of 1D X’ in it, Coming Early September

As the rumor mills continue to churn out their dose of information, more and more information on Canon’s successor to the 7D is coming to light. Earlier rumors have pointed to a brand new, “revolutionary” sensor being in this impending beast, but new rumors have pointed out even more exciting use for those holding out, specifically, that the 7D replacement is going to have “a lot of 1D X” in it.

Canon 7D Officially Marked ‘Discontinued’ on Amazon

There are plenty of reliable rumors from trusted sources claiming that the 7D Mark II (if that's even what it'll be called) will finally be arriving sometime in early September, but those rumors are now being bolstered by another piece of news.

The Long-Awaited Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II May Show Its Face at Photokina

The Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens first debuted in 1998... 1998! In November that'll be sixteen years on the market without a replacement, and while lenses aren't typically replaced as frequently as camera bodies, hope that Canon would manufacture a 'sequel' to the trusty old lens still runs strong.

Well, those hopeful hearts now have something to rejoice about, because the Canon Rumors has received a concrete tip that the 100-400mm followup will indeed be arriving alongside the 7D Mark II just in time for Photokina in September.

Canon 7D Replacement Possibly Spotted at the World Cup

The desire for more info and leaks about Canon's upcoming EOS 7D Mark II (possibly not called that) is strong, and the image above is a good case in point. Spotted by a Northlight Images reader, the camera circled in red is always seen at the same spot on the pitch and is always covered up, despite the fact that every other camera is uncovered.

Rumor: Canon Has a 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV in the Works for Early 2015

If you've been following the most recent rumors regarding the long-awaited Canon APS-C flagship 7D Mark II, you know that the latest news is that Canon has some fancy new sensor technology in the works, and that it's supposed to re-establish Canon as an imaging leader.

None of the rumor sites have been able to pin down what this sensor tech actually is, but its existence seems a near certainty; and now, it looks like the 7D won't be the only release to benefit from it. Canon may be refreshing the 5D and 1D lines as well.

Canon’s Latest Invite to Pro Dealers Hints at August Announcement of the 7DMII

Word on the street -- this particular street being Northlight Images -- is that Canon pro dealers in Germany are getting invites for events in July to prepare for a particular announcement in August. And while this isn’t anything out of the ordinary, the fact that pro dealers are involved at such a level means that some sort of prosumer DSLR announcement, as well as some possible lens updates, are very likely on the docket.

When you combine that with reports that the 7D will no longer be available from dealers starting in July, it’s easy to conclude that the long-awaited 7DMII might be making an August appearance.

Canon 70D to Replace the 60D and 7D, 7D MKII To Become Entry-Level Full Frame?

According to Canon Watch, reliable unnamed sources have let a few big time rumors loose regarding upcoming DSLR releases from the Japanese camera giant. The first rumor is that the 70D, which up until now was thought to be the replacement for the 60D, might in fact be replacing both the 60D and 7D. This would bring the x0D line back up to its former glory by adding professional features, increased performance and better construction.

Canon 5D Mark III Spotted in Kenya?

Photographer Stephen Oachs over at Aperture Academy caused quite a stir yesterday after sharing some photographs he took of a Japanese photographer he spotted in Kenya. The photographer revealed that he was field testing a new Canon 200-400mm with a built-in teleconverter, but what caught Oachs attention was the camera body the man was using -- a Canon DSLR that he didn't recognize. He writes,

You can see it in the photos I took... I see the "Q" button located by the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the top left. The battery grip seems to have a joystick. I also noticed a "Rate" button...hrm, any ideas?

Is this the new 5D Mark III, or maybe the 7D Mark II? This info I was not able to determine.

Man Blows a Fireball and Burns Up His Canon 5D Mark II

Expensive camera equipment getting destroyed seems to be a reoccurring theme this month here on PetaPixel. Early in the month there was the story of the 7D getting burned up in an exploding car, and earlier this week we shared a DigitalRev video of DSLRs getting abused tested for durability.

Remarkable Stop-Motion Walk Across America

Here's a really astonishing stop-motion video of a guy walking across America. Peter Cote, director Sam Griffith, and the Conscious Minds Productions crew approached Levis jeans for sponsorship and products to use during the shoot. The trip began June 17 in New York and ended July 1 in San Francisco. For the actual photography, the crew used a Canon 5D.
