Nikon to Unveil a 70-200mm f/4 Lens Next Week With Fancy Next-Gen VR

Since it was announced back in 2006, Canon's 70-200mm f/4L IS lens has been an attractive option for photographers who want a lighter and cheaper alternative to the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. For the price of one stop, one could get a lens that's nearly half as heavy (1.7lb vs 3.3lb) and significantly less expensive. Nikon shooters may soon have a similar choice as well: Nikon is planning to fill in this gap in its lens lineup by announcing its own 70-200mm f/4 a week from now.

JPEGMini to Launch Beamr: Speedy and Stylish Full-Res Mobile Photo Sharing

Since launching last year, JPEGMini has become a popular web-based option for trimming the file size of JPEG images without compromising their appearance. The web app magically shrinks photos by up to 5x while keeping the quality relatively unchanged. In May of this year, the company repackaged the technology for Macs as a simple space-saving app. Its next frontier? Mobile photo sharing and iOS.

102 Autofocus Points on Sony A99 Only Compatible with 6 Lenses At Launch

When the Sony A99 SLT was announced last month, photographers gawked at the camera's 102-point focal plane phase-detection system that compliments its traditional 19-point AF system. If you've been drooling over the idea of using 121 separate focus points, here's some bad news: the feature may not be compatible with your Sony lens.

The Phoblographer reports that only 6 lenses will be able to take advantage of the new system when the camera is launched later his month.

Canon Reportedly Field Testing a 46MP DSLR, Possibly the 3D

The frenzy of Photokina 2012 is coming to an end, but that doesn't mean crazy camera rumors are going anywhere. A big one currently floating around is that Canon is working on a DSLR with a massive number of megapixels. Northlight Images writes that we may see a preview of the camera at PhotoPlus 2012 in New York, which starts October 24.

We're told to expect to see a 'preview' of a 'high MP EOS DSLR' at the upcoming PhotoPlus show in New York (Oct 24-27). Although the current official line is that 20ish MP is a 'sweet spot' for DSLRs, D800 specs, price and performance is considered 'worrying' in some market areas.

Nikon's D800 has a highly-acclaimed 36.3MP sensor. Here are the specs that Canon will reportedly respond with: 46.1 megapixels, 5fps continuous shooting, 16-bit RAW images, and an ISO range of 100 to 12800.

Sony RX1 Leaks: A Full-Frame Fixed-Lens Compact Camera for $2800

A huge leak in the photo world today: Sony is planning to unleash a full frame compact camera called the RX1 that's designed to compete against the Leica X2, which contains a smaller APS-C sensor, and the Leica M9, which is much more expensive. Photoprice Canada and sonyalpharumors published photos of the camera, which looks like a beefier version of the highly-acclaimed RX100 compact camera (which has a smaller 1-inch sensor).

Sony A99 Specs Leak: Full Frame 24MP Sensor and Lightweight

The veil of secrecy is starting to lift from Sony's upcoming high-end full frame DSLR. sonyalpharumors has published a detailed list of specs that give a pretty complete picture of what we'll be seeing in a few weeks. The camera features a 24.3 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor and Sony's Single-Lens Translucent (SLT) technology.

Instagram Socialmatic Camera to Go from Concept to Physical Product

Do you remember the Instagram Socialmatic? It's a concept camera that made the rounds on the Internet back in May -- a camera that lets people snap photos, share them online, and print them out as squared-shared sticky-note-style instant photos. The camera will soon go from digital concept to physical reality: it's being turned into an actual camera, which is a proposed release date of mid-2013.

Leica M10 to Launch Next Month, Said to Feature Live View and HD Video

The new Leica M10 will almost certainly be announced at Photokina next month, and may have quite a few "firsts" for a camera in the M rangefinder lineup.

In addition to confirming the launch date, Leica reviewer Steve Huff writes that that the camera will likely hit store shelves in late February or early March 2013.

Canon 6D Rumors Heating Up, May Not Arrive Until October

You know the major firmware update that just rolled out for the Canon 7D? The purpose of it might have been to hold Canonites over through a couple months of DSLR-less news. Northlight Images is reporting that Canon will not be unveiling a new DSLR at Photokina, but will instead be waiting until October to unleash a new full frame DSLR on the world.

Canon EF 35mm F/1.4L II Rumored to Be on the Near Horizon

There are new rumblings in the rumor mill about a 35mm f/1.4 refresh from Canon. For years now photographers have been wondering when the lens -- popular among photojournalists and street photographers -- might see an update. According to Canon Rumors, the time is "sooner rather than later".

First Photo of a Canon 135mm f/1.8L IS?

This image of a Canon 135mm f/1.8L IS lens was posted to Chinese forum Xitek. Most people seem to agree that it's a Photoshop job, since the details on the rim of the lens don't follow the curve of the lens very well. The question is therefore whether the image is some kind of early-stage mockup of a real lens, or simply a big fat hoax.

Nikon 1 J2 to Look Virtually Identical to the J1, 11-27mm Lens Coming

Nikon is reportedly preparing to launch a followup camera to its Nikon 1 J1 mirrorless camera, to be called -- you guessed it -- the J2. Digicam info published the above leaked photograph of the camera ahead of its rumored mid-August announcement. Aside from the new J2 branding, the camera looks like it'll be virtually identical to its predecessor.

A Documentary About Hollywood’s Transition from Film to Digital

The photography industry isn't the only one transitioning away from film and into digital; Hollywood's undergoing the exact same thing. Side by Side is an upcoming documentary film produced by Keanu Reeves that offers a look into this major transition that's underway

For almost one hundred years there was only one way to make a movie — with film. Movies were shot, edited and projected using photochemical film. But over the last two decades a digital process has emerged to challenge photochemical filmmaking.

SIDE BY SIDE, a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves, takes an in-depth look at this revolution. Through interviews with directors, cinematographers, film students, producers, technologists, editors, and exhibitors, SIDE BY SIDE examines all aspects of filmmaking — from capture to edit, visual effects to color correction, distribution to archive. At this moment when digital and photochemical filmmaking coexist, SIDE BY SIDE explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring.

Apple to Use Face Detection for Exposure Metering and Snappy Autofocus

Face detection has become the snapshot photographer's invaluable assistant in ensuring tack-sharp faces, but soon it'll be able to add two more job responsibilities to its resume: exposure metering and speedier autofocus. Two patents recently awarded to Apple show that future iOS cameras (perhaps the next iPhone?) will have standard camera features that rely much more on face detection technology. The first patent, titled "Dynamic exposure metering based on face detection", allows the camera to automatically select faces as the primary target for metering. In more difficult situations -- group shots or people standing in front of a crowd, for example -- the camera will use factors such as "head proximity" to select the primary subject.

More Leaked Photos of the Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera

Here are some more leaked photos of Canon's upcoming mirrorless camera (here's our post from earlier today). Canon Rumors published a couple covertly taken photos of the camera, while Canon Price Watch released a bunch of new product shots. These images confirm that the first leaked photo wasn't some Photoshop job that had us all fooled.

First Leaked Photos of the Upcoming Leica M10?

Leica Rumors has published two small images showing what may be Leica's followup to its M9 rangefinder: the Leica M10. The camera in the photos appears to have a larger screen than the M8/M9, and is being held in a manner that suggests that it has autofocusing and live view.
