Reflecting on Two Years in the Sony Alpha Ecosystem

The third of this month marked two years since I took my first foray into the Sony Alpha Ecosystem. I thought it would be a good idea to look back to see how I’m liking the system and if my views have changed since my 12 month a7 III review.

The Fuji X100V: Falling In Love All Over Again

Every time Fuji releases a new camera I feel like this is the generation that will let me leave Canon behind. I had the same hopes and eventual disappointments with the XT2 and the XT3. Inevitably, I would realize full frame always beats out crop frame, that high ISOs and battery life can’t be matched, that Fuji was just not good enough to beat my Canons.

First Impressions: Using the Canon 1D X Mark III for Family Photography

It’s a brilliant start to the year for Canon with the full announcement of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Updating their flagship DSLR in time for the Olympics, it’s an announcement eagerly awaited by photographers across different genres who are looking for the best camera on the market.

Ricoh GR III Street Photography Review: Long Live the King!

I’ve been shooting with the Ricoh GR III for the past few months and I can tell you it definitley lives up to the hype. It’s small, stealthy and produces amazing images but is this the ultimate street photography camera? My Ricoh GR III street photography review has the answer.

Sony a7R IV Field Test: A Landscape Photographer’s Dream

Two weeks ago I unboxed the Sony a7R Mark IV mirrorless camera, the high resolution beast, and brought it with me for a field review in the mountains around Santa Clara in Northern California.

Review: Apple’s Night Mode Strikes the Right Balance of Technology & Art

Make no mistake, the new iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max smartphones from Apple are all about the camera system. From the new ultra-wide angel camera, to better Smart HDR, to Night Mode and beyond, Apple has gone to great lengths to catch up with the Google Pixel, and photographer Austin Mann thinks they've done it... and then some.

Panasonic Lumix S1H: A Review of the Best Hidden Features

A few days ago, Panasonic released their new LUMIX S1H. The S1H has gone to town with new features designed to match most filmmakers needs. The features that filmmakers have grown to love in the GH series are now available and improved upon in the full-frame S-Series.

2 Months with the Fujifilm X100F

I’ve had a copy of the x100F since early November. During that time I kind of made it my go-to camera for just about anything and everything—from my more artistic professional shots, to travel, to basic family vacation images.

OnePlus 3 Smartphone RAW Photo Review

The OnePlus 3 smartphone amazed me in many ways. There are many things I love about this phone: from the build quality, to the speed of the Android interface. But the camera is where this phone really shines.

Intimate Objects – The LOMO’Instant Automat

With the proliferation of digital photography in today’s modern market, perfection has become the new normal. Photography is an art practiced through initial capture, modern shooters using their camera to anchor a moment in time with as many potential options as possible be it color, tone, exposure or even as technology marches on, focus and perspective.

iPhone 7 Plus Camera Review: iPhone JPEG vs iPhone RAW vs Sony A7R II

As a full time professional photographer, I try to remind people that the best camera you have is the one you have with you. Since I have yet to permanently graft a DSLR onto my body, my best camera is often my iPhone. So, is the new iPhone 7 Plus good enough to help alleviate the anxiety I get every time I leave my camera at home? Let’s find out!

Nikon D5 Pro Review: The Batman of the Camera World

Powerful, insanely fast, supremely agile, hauntingly accurate and a master of the dark. The Batman of the camera world.

I could end the review there, but what fun would that be?

To the Arctic and Back with the Leica M, a Camera Review

It was early in 2014, long enough after the introduction of the Leica M (also known as the ‘Typ 240’, or ‘M10’) when I finally bit the bullet and decided to sell my trusty Leica M-E for this newest, rather different digital rangefinder camera from the German niche camera maker.

Hands On: See How the Nikon D750 Performs in a Plethora of Real-World Situations

The Canon 7D Mark II has kind of stolen many of the headlines away from a different camera that was released right around the same time: the Nikon D750. A full-frame shooter that boasts an impressive sensor, DPReview recently took the 750 out to Seattle's Museum of Flight for a very informative, in-depth set of real-world tests that they've compiled into the 19-minute video review above.

Wildlife Photographer Adam Jones Takes Canon’s 7D Mark II Into the Wild for a Real World Review

When cameras get put through a review, it’s often done at a pixel-peeping level in a studio, where the lighting is consistent across the board and variables are few and far between. This is NOT one of those reviews.

When it came time to review Canon's new APS-C flagship, the 7D Mark II, DPReview reached out to professional wildlife photographer Adam Jones and asked him to take the camera out into the wild... literally.

A Review of the Panasonic Lumix LX100’s 4K Photo Mode

One of the most exciting things about capturing high resolution video with the Panasonic LX100 is the ability to extract high resolution still photos from it. Video grabbing is not a new thing, but in standard definition you were looking at stills measuring a third of a Megapixel, and even in Full HD you'd only enjoy 2 Megapixels. But with 4k video you can make 8 Megapixel grabs which is much more useful.

Nikon D750 Review: Nikon… You’ve Created a Monster

This Nikon D750 Review by Ross Harvey was originally published on his blog, and is being reprinted in full with permission.

What this review isn’t: pixel peeping and statistical comparisons between various cameras.

What this review is: a real world account in a professional environment from a gear lover with high standards. It's not intended to be a catch-all review, it's specifically tailored for my own needs and shooting style.

Important notes: 1) These cameras were paid for by myself, it's an unbiased review. 2) I have used and compared gear from many other brands. They didn't hit the spot and hence not adopted professionally. 3) Every shot (except dance floor) is ambient/available light. No flash whatsoever.

Humor: ‘Creepiest Canon Camera Review EVER’ Parodies Camera Comparisons

Editor's Note: There is both strong language and a few borderline NSFW scenes in this video. Proceed with caution.

'Frank Lasagna' wants to highlight the differences between the Canon 6D and the T5i. He also wants to spy on his neighbor's wife in the highest possible quality. Fortunately for you if you need a laugh, he does both in this parody review titled, extremely accurately: "The Creepiest Canon Camera Review EVER."

Review: The Olympus TG-850 is a Capable Tough Cam with a Selfie Problem

Beaches, babes, sun and surf. It's summer, and that equals one thing: you can't take your precious DSLR to the beach. Well, not unless you want to gamble on a costly repair bill after butterfingers drops it in the sand. The beach is a time for relaxation, not being an overly protective nanny of the expensive camera that mom won't let you get wet.

Photography of your family while you ride the waves and soak up the sun should be carefree, and for that you'll be wanting a tough and waterproof camera. One that not only stands up to day-to-day abuses, but that you can hand off to your little ones worry free so they can go do what they do best and take selfies in the surf: the TG-850 is that camera.

Why Do Photo Gear Reviews Have Crappy Sample Images?

It took me many years to overcome the affliction known as gear acquisition syndrome. You see, I am a self-professed gear head, and I went through a period where I needed every new Nikon DSLR and I simply couldn’t get enough watt/seconds from a single strobe pack. Although there is no known cure, I have been able to curtail my purchasing habits, but not my voracious appetite for camera gear reviews.

A single review of the new 1D7s Mark 15 isn’t enough. I need to read them all. And while perusing the myriad of sites that offer gear-envious reviews of the newest 4K thingamajig with the phase detection hybrid focusing doodad and the retro-styled burled walnut tchotchke inspired by whatchamacallit, I couldn’t help but notice something that I’d like to run past you...

The Nikon Df Takes DxOMark’s Low-Light Crown, Outperforms the D4

It seems the Nikon engineers had some tricks up their sleeves when they put the D4 sensor inside the new Nikon Df, because while the sensor earned identical scores to the D4 in almost every category when DxOMark put it through its paces, the Df actually BEAT the D4 in the "low-light ISO" category.

But more than that, it beat EVERYBODY in that category, narrowly edging out the previous champion D3s to claim the number one low-light spot among DxOMark's rankings.
