The Dark Side of Photography: When Getting the ‘Best’ Shot is Just Plain Wrong

I firmly believe that photography is a powerful force for good in this world.

As reportage, it opens our eyes to tragedies we might otherwise ignore; as landscape or wildlife photography, it reveals a beauty we too often take for granted, and encourages us to treat the planet with the respect it demands; as portraiture, it reminds us that each person has uncharted and unfathomable depths to their humanity that we may never truly understand.

Leaked Photos of Fujifilm’s Upcoming Interchangeable Lens Mirrorless Camera

Fujifilm is set to release an interchangeable lens mirrorless camera -- likely styled like the X100 and X10 -- in February 2012, and details about the camera are already starting to leak onto the Internet. Six photos that appear to show the upcoming camera were leaked on Chinese forum Xitek, but were quickly taken down. PhotoRumors writes that the new camera will be called the Fuji LX and will pack an APS-C sensor.

Nikon Announces J1 and V1 Mirrorless Cameras and New Lens System

Nikon's long-awaited mirrorless camera system has arrived. Today Nikon announced the new J1 and V1 mirrorless cameras and four new Nikon "1 System" lenses. The two cameras have nearly identical specs: a 10.1 megapixel CX-format (13.2mmx8.8mm) CMOS sensor with 2.7x crop factor, a 3-inch LCD screen, 10fps shooting, 1080/30p HD video recording, 1200fps slow-motion recording at 320x120, simultaneous video/still capture, 73-point hybrid autofocus, and 12-bit RAW files.

Leaked Photo Alleged to Show Nikon Mirrorless Mount and Sensor

This photo that allegedly shows the mount and sensor on Nikon's upcoming mirrorless camera was just leaked onto the Chinese forum Xitek. My initial reaction was, "wow, that sensor looks small!". However, the camera is in fact rumored to have a relatively small 2.6x crop sensor (by comparison, the new Pentax Q has a 5.7x crop sensor).

Nikon Rumored to Announce Mirrorless Pro Camera in April 2011

Nikon's entry into the mirrorless camera market may only be a few months away. Mirrorless Rumors is reporting that, according to "good sources", Nikon will unveil a new mirrorless system in April 2011. Unlike the existing EVIL cameras on the market today (e.g. Sony NEX, Samsung NX, and Micro Four Thirds cameras), the new system will not be geared towards amateurs and photo enthusiasts, but rather professional photographers.

Nikon Patents an Interchangeable Sensor System for EVIL Cameras

In the present day world of photography, "mainstream" digital cameras aren't nearly as modular as desktop computers since components can't easily be swapped in and out of the camera body. The future might look quite different, and Nikon is taking a step in that direction with a recent patent filing for interchangeable sensors on EVIL cameras. In addition to choosing a particular lens depending on the desired photo, photographers would be able to choose different sensors as well.

Pentax-esque Nikon Concept Camera

DCHome forum member voigtlander just posted this photograph of a Nikon concept camera from Nikon Sapporo Showroom, where photography is prohibited. There's a lot of discussion over whether or not this design suggests what a future Nikon EVIL camera might look like, since it seems to have the same form factor as existing EVIL cams (e.g. Samsung NX10).

Olympus Ditching DSLRs in Favor of EVIL Cameras

Olympus is ditching the entry-level DSLR in favor of its Micro Four Thirds mount PEN line of EVIL cameras. In an interview with Fotopolis, Toshiyuki Terada -- the Product Manager of Olympus' SLR Planning Department -- is quoted as saying,

We do not have concrete plans to replace the E-620 and other recent SLRs. The entry level SLR class can be completely replaced by the Pen system in terms of performance.

Later in the interview, Terada seems to say that leaving the DSLR market entirely is one of the company's goals.

Panasonic Lumix GH2 Becomes Official

Panasonic announced the Lumix GH2 today at Photokina. Here's the low down: the GH2 is a 16.05 megapixel Micro Four Thirds EVIL camera with an ISO range of 160 to 12800, 23 autofocus points, face detection, a 3-inch swiveling LCD screen, and HD video recording at 1080p (60i/24p). You can also use the 3D lens Panasonic announced recently to capture 3D photos with this camera. This camera will ship by the end of this year at a price of $900 for the body only.

Fujifilm Unveils the FinePix X100: A Beautiful Rangefinder-Style Compact

Wow... Fujifilm just unveiled a new EVIL compact camera it's going to be showing off at Photokina, and it look amazing. The camera is styled like a film rangefinder camera, with a leathery covering surrounding the body and a magnesium alloy top and base plate. Inside the camera is a 12.3 megapixel APS-C sensor that has an ISO range of 200 to 6400 and captures 720p video or stills at 5fps. There's a 2.8 inch LCD on the back, and a new and innovative hybrid viewfinder that can toggle between electronic and optical modes. The lens is a fixed prime 23mm f/2 Fujinon.

Mysterious and Fishy Nikon Q Photos

The above photographs were anonymously emailed to Nikon Rumors recently, and appear to show Nikon presenting some sort of upcoming "Q" camera. The fact that Nikon has begun including the text "F Mount" on their rear lens caps seems to indicate that we might see a new mount introduced soon, possibly for a new EVIL system and in time for Photokina.

Canon EIS Mirrorless System Rumors Floating Around

There's a very improbable rumor floating around about a new Canon EIS (Electro Imaging System) mirrorless system that will be announced in mid-2011. The rumor was first posted to a couple Chinese forums, xitek and 520dc. EOSHD then created the above graphic with a fake logo and non-EVIL camera design.

So what's in the rumor? The new Canon EIS 60 mirrorless camera will supposedly have a sensor nearly identical in size to the Micro Four Thirds system that captures 22 megapixels. Continuous shooting goes up to a whopping 20 frames per second at 5.5 megapixels. HD video recording is included, and ISO is expandable up to 25,600.

Samsung NX100 Photo and Specs Leaked

According to Mirrorless Rumors, the NX100 will be a 14.6 megapixel HD video capable (720p) camera with an ISO range of 100 to 6400. An electronic viewfinder can optionally be attached via the hotshoe, and there is no built-in flash.

A Look at Sony’s Upcoming Ultra Compact

Sony has been quite mum with regards to their upcoming ultra-compact camera. However, they've begun releasing some teasers to give us a better idea of what's to come, including the above YouTube video and the following screenshots of the touchscreen interface:
