A photographer and group of models were summoned to an inquest in England this week regarding their actions during a photo shoot last year. After breaking into an abandoned warehouse, the group stumbled across a dead body. Instead of calling police, however, they kept shooting photos and then went out for pizza.
Earlier this year, wedding photographer Lexia Frank published a series of 4 short videos that teach how to properly pose models in order to minimize possibly undesirable features. The first video focuses on removing double chins, the second on hiding the upper body, the third on cutting inches off the waist, and the last on posing your model’s feet correctly.
Instagram sparked controversy this week after deleting this photograph of a woman lying on a bed with menstruation blood seen on her clothing and on her sheets. She's now demanding to know why other more graphic or risqué photos are allowed on the service while images of a fully clothed woman on her period are not.
As Photokina draws nearer, the rumor mill seems to be churning out more and more notable updates. The latest of these is a compilation of rumors shared with Nikon Rumors that points at Nikon releasing a new full-frame DSLR. Said to fall between the D610 and D810 models, the supposed specs are rather impressive considering the price point.
Trina Merry is a bodypainting artist based in San Francisco. There's a good chance you've seen her work before, as a number of her projects have enjoyed widespread viral success on the Web.
Her "Human Motorcycle Project" is a series of photographs showing motorcycles created entirely out of painted human bodies.
Years ago, well-known Seattle photographer Chase Jarvis went through a collection of the gear he takes on his photo and video shoots. But given the great deal of change in technology -- and capital on his side -- since then, he recently created a completely new and updated video showing, again, his must-have gear for photo and video shoots.
Carl Warner isn't your typical landscape photographer. Where most would take to the outdoors, the London-based photog creates landscapes in his studio. Previously, we shared his surreal photo series Foodscapes: landscapes created using all manner of edible products.
His most recent project is a departure from his work with food, and perhaps posed an even greater challenge. Dubbed "Bodyscapes," the series turns the ridges, hills and valleys of one or more human bodies into strange and surreal landscape photos.
I recently had an unusual experience. I was standing in a department store aimlessly browsing some shiny shelving that held many glittery bottles with promises of youth and perfect beauty. In the process of being pseudo hypnotized by the lovely array of bright colors, I heard a small feminine voice pipe up in the aisle behind me.
She was fawning over the stunning portraits of celebrity beauties that held small spaces, conveniently placed right above eye level. She kept saying how perfect and beautiful they all were, and you could hear a kind of wistful tone to her phrases. The kind of tone that says “I wish that were me”. After a few moments of hearing her adoration, I couldn’t keep quiet.
In 1993, a convicted murderer named Joseph Paul Jernigan was executed. Having donated his body to science, his body was sliced to provide 1,871 high-resolution cross-section photographs of human anatomy in what is known as the Visible Human Project.
Last year we shared a project called 12:31, in which two photographers used an animation of the cross-section slices to photograph ghostly figures through light-painting. Inspired by that project, photographer Andy Leach recently used the animation for a shoot of his own: he recreated Jernigan's body as a hologram.
Two interesting Canon rumors are currently floating around. The first has to do with the 46MP DSLR that Canon is reportedly field testing and may be planning to unveil in late October. Northlight Images received a tip saying the camera's body will be 1D-X-esque:
In an update to the high MP info, we're told that a camera will eventually appear in a 1D X derived body, in the same way as the 1D C. The information said that the actual designation was not known, but it would essentially be a '1 series'. There was also a warning that there would be a long wait between any 'preview' and any cameras being annouced and subsequently shipping.
If true, this means Canon is going for the larger pro-style body rather than following after Nikon's 36.3MP D800.
San Francisco-based photographer Lee Materazzi shoots photographs of people whose bodies are stuffed uncomfortably into random spaces. Her subjects are seen smushed between two doors, smothered by a garden hose, and even squeezed into a tunnel under a pathway.
All the images involve body manipulation rather than photo manipulation. She says that her work deals with the "thin line between finding oneself and losing oneself."
Kingston University photography students Luke Evans and Josh Lake wanted to do something unusual for their final major project, so they decided to turn themselves into human cameras by eating 35mm film squares and letting their bodies do the rest. After eating and pooping out the film in the dark, they used fixer on the film and then scanned the film using an electron microscope. They are currently exhibiting massive prints of the images that show every detail of what their bodies did.
It's common knowledge that models in magazines are Photoshopped to look the way that they do -- often to the detriment of the young girls that aspire to have these computer generated figures -- but for the most part protests have come in the form of ad campaigns like Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty. But in the past couple of weeks, 14-year-old Julia Bluhm decided to take a different approach.
For her project titled Learning to Love the State I Am In, photographer Sam Schubert takes planking to a new level by putting her body in bizarre positions and locations in order to "integrate" herself into the materials and environments found in Baltimore.
Photographer Lilly McElroy has a unique series of photos titled I Throw Myself At Men that consists of self-portraits showing her launching herself into the arms of strangers.
For this project I went to a lot of bars and I literally threw myself at men who I didn't know. I used my body as a projectile, hurling myself toward strong, vulnerable men who were waiting to catch me. Poised in a perpetual state of social awkwardness and in full possession of the ability to subvert stereotypical gender roles, the photographs pose questions concerning relationships, social connection, sex, gender, and the desire to form relationships quickly that are both intense and long lasting.
The project got started after McElroy placed ads on Craigslist asking for men who'd be willing to meet blind date-style in bars and have McElroy throw herself at them.

Here’s a slow motion video showing a closeup look at the human eye, our amazing biological lens (and sensor).
It's a pretty common question: if you had to choose, would you rather have a top-of-the-line DSLR with a cheap lens or an entry-level body with pro glass? Kai of DigitalRev attempts to answer the question through a hands on experiment in this humorous and educational video.
Here’s really random/strange/stupid idea inspired by a comment left yesterday, but have you heard of anyone “printing” …
These ghostly figures you see in these photographs weren't Photoshopped in, but are purely done through light painting. If you remember the creative 3D light painting technique using an iPad that we shared a while back, Croix Gagnon and Frank Schott took it a step further and put a slightly morbid twist on it. For their project "12:31", they "painted" using a laptop and an animation showing cross-sections of a human body!
