- PetaPixel 9/10
If you need something wide, fast, performant, and cheap, the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 FE does not disappoint.
- OpticalLimits 8/10
The Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 FE impressed us, to say the least.
-
All in all, the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 has great build quality and handling. It’s in line with much more expensive lenses and a clear step up from the other two Viltrox lenses I’ve tested in the past.
-
If you want a high performing wide angle prime for your Z-mount body…look no further.
-
It's fantastic value for money, useful, and fun, so it comes highly recommended.
-
I don't doubt the tested lens will find a lot of satisfied fans and users.
-
The Viltrox AF 16mm F1.8 Z is a good option if you are looking for an affordable full-frame ultra-wide AF lens for a Nikon Z camera. It is nice and sharp and it is very fast for a wide-angle prime.
-
When it comes to the Chinese lens manufacturers so far the one with the most advanced products was Laowa.
-
The ultra-wide-angle AF 16mm F1.8 L is the first ever lens that Viltrox have released for the L-mount camera system, after they joined the L-mount Alliance in September 2025.
-
The full-frame compatible 16mm F1.8 is pricier than most of its stablemates but still exceptional value for money, considering its superb image quality, refined handling and its host of features that even includes a color LCD display. For me, the lens is an absolute keeper.
-
A lens of the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8's quality for such an amazing price must be considered if you’re a landscape and/or astrophotographer – it's just a shame that it's currently only available for Sony FE (the model reviewed here) and Nikon Z mounts.
-
I'm happy with the Laowas, the Voigtlanders, and the Tokinas, and even though this Viltrox doesn't look particularly great, the photos do, and that really is all that matters.
-
It seems Viltrox has outdone themselves again with this lens. While I haven't done a really in-depth test of this lens yet, it's safe to say the optical performance of this lens is not bad at all, just like their other latest lenses.
-
So it's an absolute beast, but it's by far the best built Viltrox lens I've had my hands on, and it also rivals far more expensive lenses.
-
With that said, this Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 is simply fantastic.
-
Viltrox's AF 16mm F1.8 FE is an excellent ultra-wide and uniquely bright lens. If you can utilize a 16mm prime lens in your photography or videography, I can highly recommend this one.
-
So if you want a budget lens that is crisp corner to corner and it's a wide angle, this is it.
-
After shooting with it quite a bit, I’ve found the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 AF Z to be good, cost-effective, and fun to shoot with — a great combination that’s hard to find.
-
I just think this lens is amazing overall, especially for the price.
-
The Viltrox AF 16mm F/1.8 L is a meaningful addition to the L-Mount ecosystem, bringing a combination of accessibility, functionality, and performance that has historically been limited within this system.
-
[T]his bargain direct-from-China lens better than Nikon's old Z 20mm f/1.8 because it's better made and handles much better.
-
The Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 FE is a fantastic lens for landscape and astrophotography. Image quality is impressive, both wide open and stopped down for a larger depth-of-field, while the build quality and price are exceptional.
-
The Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Z seems to hit a sweet spot regarding value for dollars spent. With prime lens qualities and a focal length suitable for a range of topics, including landscape, architecture, cityscape, and event photography, it is certainly worth considering.
-
The construction feels great, the glass is impressive, the features are plentiful, and the price is incredible.
-
In a nutshell, this lens is really good for what it is: price point, performance, no issues, no complaints whatsoever.
-
I've been really, really impressed with the image quality.
-
It is not a novelty lens, it is not a toy; this is a lens that is good enough for professional work and with this focal length and wide aperture, a very versatile wide angle perfect for landscape, architecture, and pretty much everything when you need the wide field of view.
-
When it comes to the price and the value for your money, hands down, I think this is a really, really good deal because honestly, there are not that many lenses to choose from.
-
[T]hey're not perfectly smooth bokeh balls, but they are definitely good-looking and very acceptable at this price point, so I am absolutely in love with this lens [...]
-
[I]f you're looking for a wide-angle lens [...] I would look no further than the 16mm f/1.8 Viltrox because there's nothing out there that is like it.
-
I really shot a ton with this thing, a couple little quirks that we'll get into, but overall I think this is a fantastic lens and yeah it does come highly recommended.
-
My final thoughts on this lens is that it's an incredible value.
