While its f/4 maximum aperture may limit low-light performance and background separation, it remains a highly capable and sharp everyday lens for those prioritizing portability.

I've had such a great time with this; this is probably my favorite standard zoom I've used from Sony to date, just really really nice to have.

If you’re after the flexibility of a general-purpose zoom though, the 20-70 f4 G becomes a key contender, and as a fan of wider-angles I’d now choose it over the 24-105 as a walkaround lens for a full-frame Sony mirrorless.

Yeah, I think overall we're seeing this lens just being incredibly versatile for both still photography and video. It's smooth, it's quiet, and it just produces beautiful image quality.

  • Sony has gone one step further here, and a lens stretching from an ultra-wide 20mm through to a short telephoto 70mm, focusing right down to almost half-life-size, is an amazing and versatile option for Sony A series users.

I would definitely pick the 20-70 because, in fact, my walking around lens has been a 16-35 because I do like that ability to go wider more so than zooming in tight.

Now if you're like a one lens person, so you just want one lens to travel around, you don't take a lot of other lenses, you don't want to swap lenses, I would probably get this one instead.

  • The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is one of the more interesting standard-range zoom lenses to appear in recent times and it’s well worth a look for anyone who wants a wider reach than the standard 24-70mm or 24-105mm zooms.

It is a very very helpful and versatile lens and I'm going to tell you more about it because I don't think it's going to fit a lot of you.

All that said, I think that if you're new to the Sony full-frame system and you're looking for your first zoom lens, this should be at the top of the list.

  • ZY Cheng

[T]his Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G as the new king of versatility because, just like the 24-70s, which have always pretty much been the perfect all-rounders for both stills and video, this builds upon that by being unusually wide as well.

  • Taylor Jackson

It's a new kit lens, and it is one lens I would say if you're only going to buy one lens for your Sony camera, I would recommend that it is this one, and that is my honest opinion on it.

  • iPhonedo

In the end, this is a very capable, very good lens, and it seems like they listen to all of us and brought us a lens that can do more than just one thing, and I think that's what matters, especially when you're beginning.

At $1,199.00, I find the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 offers good value for the money, as long as you are aware of its limitations. As an event lens, when the light drops, you should consider faster f/2.8 zoom options or even faster primes.

So as far as my thoughts on this lens and who I think it's for, I really, really think this is a great option as a kit lens for anyone who's looking for that one lens that can do a little bit of everything.
