What the Reviewers Say

All 24 expert reviews, weighted into the PixelMeter score.

  • PetaPixel 9.5/10

The Sony a7R VI might very well be the last camera many photographers truly need. It won't be the last camera people want, of course, but there is very little this camera cannot do, at least for still photography.

The Sony a7R VI is a faster, higher-resolution version of the company's high-res full-frame model, delivering exceptional dynamic range and improved video compared to its predecessor.

Sony knows how to do high resolution better than anyone, and the Sony α7R VI is Exhibit A in the defense. High resolution has many strengths, but it also comes with definite liabilities.

  • The Verge 9/10

[T]his is the first of Sony’s R cameras I’ve looked at and thought, “Yeah, this could be my one camera for everything.”

Sony’s ‘R’ series is all about quality — you buy one for pixels, and lots of them — but the A7R VI adds high speed performance into the mix. [...] The [...] stacked 66.8MP sensor is incredible, as is autofocus performance and the all-new high capacity battery.

If that kind of quality is important for you, along with some extra speed and decent video features, I highly recommend the A7R VI.

I really enjoy using this camera, but it is more complicated when you're trying to recommend a camera like this because it doesn't.

This is a really strong update to the a7R series though, which should be very exciting for high-resolution photographers and videographers.

All in all, Sony’s launched a stellar – albeit pricey – hybrid camera that’s sure to win it a fair few fans.

This may be a little weird and unpopular, but I think this camera's going to be almost for everyone except those who want high-speed action shoots and really need the no rolling shutter at all.

  • SheClicks

The Sony A7R VI looks like one of Sony’s most ambitious high-resolution cameras to date. Instead of focusing solely on resolution, Sony appears to have created a camera that combines detail, speed and versatility in a much more balanced way.

  • Who Is Matt?

If you are a hybrid photographer who wants a camera that absolutely crushes it on the photography side [...] the a7R VI gets my highest recommendation. [D]efinitely not cheap, but given everything you’re getting, it feels fair.
