This Hong Kong Travel Film is Filled with Creative Camera Tricks

Traveling filmmaker Brandon Li has been chronicling his travels around the world over the last several years through short films. His latest one, titled “Hong Kong Strong,” is one that’s filled with creative camera techniques and editing tricks.

It’s “a deep dive into the many layers of Hong Kong,” Li writes. “A film about the madness and beauty of this seemingly impossible city in the days leading up to Chinese New Year. And an exploration of my own Cantonese heritage.”

“My new travel film features a myriad of experimental techniques, from the Hitchcock Dolly Zoom effect to invisible wipes, hyperlapse, and crazy cross-cutting between many scenes to create a seamless multi-threaded narrative,” Li tells PetaPixel. “It’s a Pandora’s box of editing tricks, all to create an authentic sense of what it means to be in Hong Kong.”

Here’s a director’s commentary video that contains behind-the-scenes details about the creation of the film:

More of Li’s short films can be found through his Vimeo page. After selling all his belongings, he has been living out of a suitcase and traveling to over 30 countries around the globe.
