  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM

Sony's FE 85mm f1.4 GM is a high-end prime lens for its mirrorless cameras. The short telephoto focal length and bright f1.4 focal ratio make it ideal for portraits and the de-clickable aperture ring also makes it great for video work.

  • Olympus OM-D E-M1X

Yes the E-M1X is a specialist body with a correspondingly limited audience, and there’s no getting away from the fact it’s the largest, heaviest and most expensive Micro Four Thirds camera to date, but it’s a camera I still enjoyed shooting with immensely.

  • Nikon Z7

Ultimately the Z7 is an impressive start to the Z-system and one that’s very satisfying for a version-one product. Nikon’s hit the ground running with a camera I greatly enjoyed using and can easily recommend, particularly if you own existing F-mount lenses.

  • Canon EOS R

Ultimately the EOS R is a version one product entering a market where Sony is comfortably selling its third generation bodies and an extensive range of native lenses. As such, the EOS R inevitably struggles to compete, but still shows promise in some key respects.

  • Fujifilm X-T100

Ultimately the Fujifilm X-T100 delivers photos that look as good as the best models in its class and can also turn its hand to 1080p vlogging. So long as you don't shoot fast action or need smooth 4k video, it's a strong contender in the entry-level market.

  • Canon EOS Rebel T7 (2000D)

The Canon EOS 2000D / Rebel T7 provides one of the most affordable pathways to serious photography for beginners on a budget. Interchangeable lenses, a 24 Megapixel APSC sensor, an optical viewfinder and a good LCD screen don't come much cheaper than this.

  • Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM

Canon's EF-M 22mm f2 is a compact prime lens for EOS mirrorless cameras with APSC sensors, upon which it delivers classic 35mm equivalent coverage; note it's not compatible with Canon DSLRs.

  • Canon EOS M50

Indeed the M50 may be pitched as an upper entry-level model, but I reckon it's Canon's most compelling mirrorless to date. Coupled with a hotshoe and microphone input, the M50 will be as popular with vloggers as it is with those looking for an upgrade from smartphone photography.

  • Panasonic Lumix ZS200 (TZ200)

Ultimately for many photographers, the TZ200 / ZS200's combination of a big zoom and decent sensor in a pocket body is all they need to know: the lens range and feature-set are unbeatable in its class and like its predecessor it comes highly recommended.

  • Canon EOS Rebel SL2 (200D)

The entry-level EOS 1300D / T6 may remain Canon's cheapest DSLR, but with its smaller body, superb movie autofocus, mic input and flip-out touchscreen, the EOS 200D / SL2 is simply much more compelling for first-time DSLR buyers who are willing to spend a little extra.
