Reviewer Consensus

Good

The Canon EOS M50 is a compact, user-friendly mirrorless camera that delivers sharp stills and reliable autofocus for beginners and hobbyists. That said, its 4K video functionality is severely limited by a heavy crop and the absence of Dual Pixel autofocus, making it a better fit for still photography than serious filmmaking.

As a stills camera, the EOS M50 is a solid choice for photographers who want something more advanced than an entry-level camera, without going overboard. Its image quality, improved AF system and wireless connectivity are all impressive, and the new C-Raw format is a nice bonus.

Indeed the M50 may be pitched as an upper entry-level model, but I reckon it's Canon's most compelling mirrorless to date. Coupled with a hotshoe and microphone input, the M50 will be as popular with vloggers as it is with those looking for an upgrade from smartphone photography.

The Canon M50 is a nice, powerful and affordable little entry-level camera for people who want an interchangeable lens camera without having to schlepp around a huge amount of kit.

This is an excellent entry-level beginners mirrorless camera, albeit at a higher price point, but I like the easiest menu system, the touchscreen is intuitive, the autofocus is quick, and things like that.

  • The Canon EOS M50 offers a compact, DSLR styled mirrorless camera, with an updated 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, which gives excellent image quality, with the same excellent colour reproduction that you get with Canon EOS DSLRs.

  • It's surprisingly capable for what is after all only a "mid-range" camera, but unfortunately it also surprisingly under-performs in a few key areas, which may make or break its potential appeal.

In many ways the EOS M50 is the best entry-level EOS Canon has yet made. It’s a great option both for beginners and for Canon DSLR owners tempted by the advantages of mirrorless.

The Canon EOS M50 packs a lot of tech into its compact body, and the fact it has a viewfinder – when so many similarly priced mirrorless cameras don’t – is a big selling point.

The Canon EOS M50 is the company's first affordable camera with 4K, but there are better mirrorless options out there for video.

The Canon EOS M50 does a very good job in many ways, but it doesn't quite knock Sony's A6300 from the top spot, due to low battery life and lackluster image stabilization in video mode. And Sony's system also offers more lenses at this point.

This is actually a fantastic camera for people who want to become a YouTuber. It's easy to use, great for beginners, but it's not for vloggers.

  • The simplification of the M50’s controls will appeal to point-and-shooters. The auto functions provided sharp, well-exposed images and movie clips in our shooting tests, thanks in part to the improved autofocusing system.

The M50 is sort of a breakthrough camera for video shooters. If you do not want to break the bank, and want and expect reliable fast AF, a swivel out screen and touch controls as well as an EVF and light weight WITH image stabilization built in, the M50 may be perfect for you.
