Not only is the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM an optically wonderful lens with excellent sharpness throughout the image and controlled distortion, but it’s also all housed in a package that beats the pants off of its current main competitor in Sigma.

Now I don't know if Vlad's going to switch over to the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM from his Sigma, but I'm sure he's probably GM curious right now, and I think looking at the file side by side the Sony is a better astrophotography lens.

Ultimately the Sony 14 1.8 will greatly appeal for traditional landscape, architecture and astro as well as low light and video work. Not only does it deliver the goods across the board, it’s considerably more portable than its only rival and roughly the same price too.

It's more of a niche lens than a wide zoom, but if you're in that niche you'll enjoy excellent performance all around.

It's just that as a lens, this 14 millimeter is not too useful for many; it's not relevant for many photographers. Now, I can imagine that this lens will be popular with landscapers—not the people who do your gardens—and astrophotographers because it's wide and it's fast.

So for many photographers or filmmakers who need an ultra wide angle lens, this is going to be an awesome choice, but there are a few little tiny hang ups that I've got that I do want to point out.

This lens can make pretty much anything look interesting but without any usual drawbacks, and for what it is and what it can do, the price isn't too bad either. So in other words, I would highly recommend this lens.
