Reviewer Consensus

Exceptional

The Sony Alpha 7R V is a powerhouse for high-resolution stills that leverages a sophisticated AI-driven autofocus system to deliver exceptional detail and reliability. That said, the camera is a significant investment that relies on a slow sensor readout, which can introduce noticeable rolling shutter in video modes.

What the Reviewers Say

All 39 expert reviews, weighted into the PixelMeter score.

  • PetaPixel 8.5/10

With the newest autofocus system available from Sony, the a7R V will likely be the king of autofocus from the company for some time. There is not another camera in Sony's lineup with autofocus this good, making it the best all-around choice in Sony's lineup.

The a7R V is a confidence-inspiring camera to use. Mount a good lens on it and you get that sense that Nikon’s D850 used to give: anything that goes wrong is your fault, not the camera’s, and it’ll do everything it can to make sure nothing goes wrong.

This is easily one of Sony's best cameras they've ever made, but it's not the best value camera in their lineup altogether, because you still have cheaper, but very capable options in the a7 IV and FX30.

Likewise, if you’re not ideologically wedded to full-frame, you can get a significant fraction of the capability at a much lower price from the Fujifilm X-H2 or X-T5. But if you can justify the A7R V’s price, you’ll be blown away by just how good it is.

The long list of improvements on the a7RV basically check off every box that I would look for in this class of camera, and, much like the a7RIII, I feel like the a7RV is the upgrade that many people are looking for who might have skipped the a7RIV upgrade path.

Its resolution and price tag do set it just out of reach for some, or make it slightly sub-optimal for others. However, if you’re looking for a high-resolution camera, and you have the budget, then the R5 is my top recommendation.

Look, as a content creator, having that four-way tilt screen adds so much value to this camera for someone like me specifically, then I'm willing to give all that up.

We think the Sony A7R V is a fantastic all-round camera that can handle most things you throw at it. We wouldn't necessarily recommend getting it if you already have the A7R IV or IVA (unless you are a videographer and want the 8K 25p video from the V).
