Nikon’s Newest Japan-Only Merch Makes Me Wish I Had More Business

Business cards are a big deal in Japan. Nikon, which certainly loves its cool, Japan-exclusive merch, is combining Japan’s deep respect for business cards and Nikon’s rich history. The result is an extremely cool business card holder that borrows its style from the classic Nikon F3 film SLR.

The Nikon Leather Business Card Holder, Black x Red, uses Japanese cowhide leather with a texture similar to that used on Nikon cameras. It features a vertical red foil-stamped line like Nikon’s classic F3 film SLR and an embossed Nikon wordmark inside.

Each business card holder is made by skilled artisans in Tokyo, and Nikon says that it will age, or patina, over time. The interior has two pockets: one for people to store their own business cards, ready to hand out, and another for the cards they receive.

It is hard to overstate how significant business cards are to Japanese corporate culture. While to many people elsewhere a business card may be a simple piece of paper with useful contact information, Japanese culture places great weight on business cards, and etiquette governs how people share them.

The process of exchanging cards has its own customs, as does how people appreciate and eventually store them. A business card is never to be immediately slipped into a pocket, bent, or otherwise damaged. A high-quality business card holder is a must-have.

“While it has a simple design that is easy to use in formal settings, this business card holder is packed with the charm of Nikon cameras,” Nikon says of its new business card holder.

”Like your favorite camera, it is a business card holder that you can use for many years to come,” Nikon adds.

I will take this opportunity to bemoan, yet again, that Nikon Direct Japan has such a wide range of merchandise, and photographers in the U.S. have nothing to throw money at and show off their Nikon love.

Do I need a business card holder? No, but how else should I store my eggshell cards with Romalian type? They even have a watermark.

The Nikon Leather Business Card Holder is available for preorder today, and Nikon says it will begin shipping on November 2. It is available to view in person at Nikon Plaza Tokyo.
