What the Reviewers Say

All 30 expert reviews, weighted into the PixelMeter score.

  • PetaPixel 8.5/10

The LAB lenses in particular clearly show an emphasis on providing professional-quality results without asking photographers to wield a huge budget.

[T]he fact that this can trade blows on so many fronts and still be like $400 cheaper than the G Master and give you that extra third stop when needed makes this a very compelling option, especially since you're not giving up much when it comes to build quality or performance.

  • OpticalLimits 8.5/10

8.5 Highly Recommended Viltrox delivered another impressive lens - this time the ultra-fast Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB FE. It's not only fast, but also capable of producing great image quality.

In practice, I’d say it has very few compromises. It’s sharp where it counts, has very smooth bokeh, and would be a great event lens with its super fast f/1.2 aperture.

Crucially, the optical performance is very impressive. The lens produces sharp results at all apertures, including towards the corners, while distortion, chromatic aberration and flare are controlled very well.

Well, you've probably already figured out that I'm pretty impressed with this LAB lens, and I feel like it's a really, really competitive option here on Z-mount [...] but literally at one-third of the price.

  • Dustin Abbott

So my conclusion is this: this once again is a great combo of build, autofocus, and optical performance, and it's at an amazing price.

The Sony 35mm F1.4 GM is a still a lovely choice if you want both high performing and compact, but the LAB 35mm is the new champ if you want that next level F1.2 goodness. It can produce brilliant images at all apertures [...] and won’t break the bank.

The lens's build quality is lovely, but more importantly, it's a sharp optic with excellent contrast and quite smooth bokeh, not to mention an extra bright maximum aperture.

  • LensTip

The Viltrox AF 35 mm f/1.2 LAB is another lens from this producer that made a very good impression. It's not a flawless construction; with such physical dimensions and optical complexity, the optics specialists could have corrected distortion and vignetting better.

I think Viltrox did a very good job releasing this Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB FE lens and to have it at a $1,000 is a good option for somebody who wants to get into a 1.2 on Sony or on Nikon but wouldn't be able to drop any more money for something else.

  • PCMag

Ultimately, its control scheme is the only thing preventing the 35mm F1.2 Lab FE from earning our top recommendation, as its aperture ring proves to be less than useful, and its function buttons are a little too squishy for a marquee optic.

The lens is cheaper than the slightly slower Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM, but it’s also larger and almost double the weight. Still, it’s a fantastic lens, and represents great value for money.

It performed well and we've always kind of known Viltrox to be more of the budget lens, but I feel like this is hitting way above its price point.
