I believe the lens will be worth the asking price for many pros shooting with Sony bodies, as it could mitigate the need for carrying a 70-200mm f/2.8 and several fast primes, such as a 50mm, 85mm and 135mm.

It manages to do something that no zoom lens has done before (on full frame) and has managed to do it in a very livable kind of way.

Sure, it’s a big, heavy lens that dwarfs Sony Alpha mirrorless bodies, but the sumptuous image quality, spectacular all-round performance and epic build quality make it worth the weight.

At first I wasn't convinced by the zoom range, but after rigorous testing, I reckon it's the most versatile and high-quality pro zoom I've used for events.

  • I think anybody who's looking at a degree of flexibility, who doesn't want to be carrying multiple camera bodies, carrying different G Master primes, and also just really don't have the time to change those primes, then this is going to be a very attractive new telephoto zoom…

This was extremely interesting because I've never seen a zoom lens compete this highly to the best of the best primes that Sony have to offer.

[T]here is no denying how handy a versatile zoom lens is, especially the 50-150mm F2, being so close in prime quality, and not having to have downtime to keep swapping out lenses might just be worth the time-saving cost.

  • Julia Trotti

I do think this zoom could potentially replace the three prime focal lengths it covers, as the image quality, as you saw, is extremely similar.
