Alongside new Cinema EOS firmware, Canon has announced some new accessories for its mirrorless EOS R System cameras, including timer remote controllers and a hotshoe microphone.
Canon Revives the Legacy of Its Classic Timer Remote Controller for Mirrorless Photographers
The new Timer Remote Controllers, the TC-N3 and TC-E3, build upon the legacy of Canon’s Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 for film and digital SLR cameras. Timer Remote Controllers are designed for specialized photographic applications, including precisely capturing long-exposure photos in bulb mode and automating and customizing long-interval photography for things like star trails and timelapses.
Compared to the TC-80N3, the new TC-N3 and TC-E3 controllers feature a 20% larger LCD panel with bigger numbers and icons, a new orange illumination backlight for better visibility at night, a new clock function to schedule shooting sessions, and tripod compatibility. It still includes dedicated shooting controls, and the remotes run on AAA batteries.
The Timer Remote Controller TC-N3 is compatible with the Canon EOS R1, EOS R3, EOS R5, EOS R5 Mark II, and EOS R5 C, and other cameras with an N3 remote terminal.
The TC-E3 works with cameras with an E3 terminal, including the EOS C50, EOS R6 Mark III, EOS R6 V, EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R8 Mark II, EOS R8, EOS R7, EOS R10, EOS R50 V, and EOS R100.
“The remotes offer photographers great flexibility and precision when capturing landscapes, astrophotography, and self-portraits, particularly in low-light environments or when composing a group photo or self-portrait from a distance,” Canon says.
The new remote controllers will begin shipping in early January. The TC-N3 is $189.99 while the TC-E3 is $209.99.
Canon’s New Compact Digital Microphone
Canon has also announced the DM-E10D, a new monaural digital microphone for use on Canon’s Multi-Function Shoe.
Compatible with a wide range of Canon cameras, including the EOS R1, R3, R5 II, R6 III, R6 II, R8 II, R8, R7, R10, R50 V, R6 V, and more, the DM-E10D features a super cardioid polar pattern mic that prioritizes sound from the front while reducing unwanted noise from the sides. It also picks up sound from the rear, so it can capture conversations between the camera operator and a subject.
The compact on-camera mic features cable-free operation and has a Menu button for easy access to audio settings. It draws power directly from the camera and includes a built-in shock mount and wind cover.
Canon notes that the DM-E10D is its smallest and lightest DM-series microphone to date. It will begin shipping by the end of December and is $209.99.
EOS R6 Mark III Cropping Guide Firmware
Canon has also announced new Cropping Guide firmware for the EOS R6 Mark III full-frame mirrorless camera. The firmware update has four different guides, including top and bottom guidelines to fit different head sizes and guidelines for positioning props in the frame.

This firmware is designed for high-volume photographers, like school and sports photographers, to consistently capture photos with the same framing of many subjects in a short time. It also includes color-coded guides for common print sizes, including 5×7 and 8×10 aspect ratios.
Canon will begin selling the EOS R6 III with the Cropping Guide firmware already installed for $2,919 in early December. It will also be available separately as a $120 service charge for existing owners.
