Canon PRO-1100 17-Inch Printer Promises Richer Blacks and Blues

Canon has announced a new A2, 17-inch class printer, the imagePROGRAF PRO-1100. Through its 12 Lucia Pro II pigment inks, the professional-grade printer promises gallery-quality prints at home or in a studio.

The PRO-1100 succeeds the PRO-1000, announced way back in 2015, which is currently PetaPixel‘s recommendation for the best photo printer for color accuracy. While the PRO-1000 also uses a dozen inks, the PRO-1100 uses brand-new inks that promise deeper black levels, richer blues (especially dark blues), and smoother color gradation. The Lucia Pro II inks also include Canon’s Chroma Optimizer, ensuring smooth reflections and anti-bronzing properties to prints. It’s a safe bet that there’s a new top choice regarding PetaPixel‘s color accuracy printing recommendations.

The pigment inks are also highly durable. Canon says that prints made on the PRO-1100 using archival media can last up to 200 years — up from 60 years on the preceding model. The inks also offer protection against abrasions and scratches on glossy prints. Per Canon, the new inks offer improved abrasion resistance compared to the PRO-1000’s Lucia PRO PFI-1000 ink set. The PRO-1100’s inks are PFI-4100, by the way.

Speaking of media, the PRO-1100 accepts a diverse range of media. Beyond borderless prints on sheets of paper up to 17 x 25 inches, the printer also supports roll prints and can make prints nearly 3.3 meters (almost 11 feet) long. This is up from a max print length of 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) on the PRO-1000. Somewhat surprisingly, the PRO-1000 also couldn’t accept 7 x 10, 9 x 13, 12 x 12, or 13 x 19-inch papers, but the PRO-1100 can. Both printers support a wide range of fine art papers, including thicker ones like Extra Heavyweight Fine Art Paper. The manual feed tray accepts paper up to 0.7 millimeters thick.

Despite the improved features, performance, and paper compatibility, the PRO-1100 is the same size as the PRO-1000. It is 723 x 435 x 285 millimeters (28.5 x 17.1 x 11.2 inches). Canon’s specifications don’t say how much the PRO-1100 weighs, but the PRO-1000 tips the scales at a beefy 32.3 kilograms (71.2 pounds), so it’s a safe bet the PRO-1100 will be in that ballpark. Like most high-end printers, the PRO-1100 is not designed to be frequently moved around.

The PRO-1100 has other features one would expect from this class of printer, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, a 3-inch LCD screen, and dedicated Canon Professional Print and Layout software.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 is available to preorder today for $1,299.99. Impressively, this is the same price the PRO-1000 launched at in October 2015.
