This Strange, Compact Tripod Head Promises Convenience and Speed

Photographer Arnt Inge Hodne has long been interested in photographic equipment. Using his experience as an engineer and his passion for photography, Hodne has teamed up with Ådne Espeland and Harald Knutsen to design, build, and market a new type of tripod head, the Quick Precision Tripod Head.

The Quick Precision Tripod Head is “a new type of tripod head” that allows for individual adjustment of all axes in a highly compact form factor. The Quick Precision Tripod Head enables one-hand operation for smaller cameras and mobile phones.

While this sounds ordinary so far, the appearance of the Quick Precision Tripod Head is extremely unusual. The Quick Precision Tripod Head aims to offer the best of three-way pan/tilt tripod heads and ball heads while cutting down on size and weight.

Three-way adjusting tripod heads are excellent in terms of precision and control. However, they are often large and heavy, and controls are often far away from the camera. It is also cumbersome to adjust each axis separately, even though this does allow for extensive control.

On the other hand, ballheads have a single control to move the camera but are more challenging to adjust precisely than three-way tripod heads. Ballheads are often relatively compact and lightweight, but a single adjustment knob’s ease of use also means that it is easy to move the camera in undesired ways when adjusting the camera.

The Quick Precision Tripod Head promises the fine-tuned control of a three-way pan/tilt tripod head with the ease of use of a ballhead. It is a lofty goal. The Quick Precision Tripod Head aims to achieve this through protective brackets that look like bent metal rods. These metal pieces attach to a tiny cylinder that includes a standard camera tripod mount on top. On this cylinder are locking mechanisms that can be easily operated with a thumb and forefinger.

As demonstrated in the GIF above, the Quick Precision Tripod Head moves using its unusual-looking metal brackets, which promise the precision and fine-tuned control of a three-way pan/tilt head without the excessive size and weight. The Quick Precision Tripod Head is smaller than nearly every ballhead, too, but should deliver a similarly straightforward user experience.

The Quick Precision Tripod Head is designed with mobility in mind. The Kickstarter campaign claims the product is built for small cameras and smartphones. All the included images show the Quick Precision Tripod Head in use with either a Sony RX100-series premium all-in-one compact camera or a smartphone. Further, the campaign does not explain the load capacity of the Quick Precision Tripod Head. It remains to be seen if the product is well-suited for compact mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.

Early bird backers can pledge 640 Norwegian Krone, just over $60, to receive the Quick Precision Tripod Head and mobile phone adapter. The product is expected to begin shipping in February 2024. The Quick Precision Tripod Head does not come with a tripod itself, so that will need to be provided by the customer.
