Instagram Now Lets Users Add Music to Photo Carousels

Instagram will now let users add music to their photo carousels and collaborate with up to three individuals as co-authors on a post or Reel.

In a blog post published on Friday, Instagram announced that it was launching a handful of features that the platform says will help users “express their creativity and connect with friends.”

Users will now be able to add music to photo carousels, collaborate with friends on posts and reels, and respond to new “Add Yours” prompts.

Instagram partnered with singer Olivia Rodrigo to unveil its new music feature which allows users to select licensed music to soundtrack their slideshows.

In a post announcing her new single Bad Idea Right?, Rodrigo shared a carousel of photos from her latest music video with the track playing over the images.

“Whether you’re sharing a collection of summer memories with friends or moments from your camera roll, you can now add music to your photo carousels,” Instagram writes in a blog post.

“Building off our launch of music for feed photos, anyone can add a song to capture the mood and bring their carousel to life.”

Instagram’s new music feature appears to rival the ability that users have on TikTok’s Photo Mode to add music to soundtrack the images, which viewers can then swipe through at their own pace. TikTok launched Photo Mode in October last year.

Instagram says it is also working to expand its music library to additional countries in the coming weeks.

“Music is a key part of how people express their creativity and interests on Instagram. We’re excited to bring our music library to more countries over the coming weeks,” the company writes.

Instagram is also launching a way for more users to collaborate on a post or a Reel. The company says that users can now invite up to three friends as co-authors. It added that a post or Reel with multiple collaborators will reach each of the user’s audiences and will feature on each account’s profile grid.

Instagram has additionally introduced the “Add Yours” sticker, a tool that enables creators and artists to engage their followers in prompts and challenges on Instagram Reels.
