Skylum Updates Luminar AI with Better Sky Replacements and Reflections

Skylum has today pushed “Update 2” to the Luminar AI editing platform that emphasizes an improvement to the sky replacement functionality. The company promises that this update offers a faster and more robust experience with its “next-generation” Sky AI tool.

The goal of this update, and arguably Luminar AI as a whole, is to remove complexity from creativity, as Skylum puts it. To that end, Luminar is seeing improvements across the board to make sky replacements not only easier to implement, but better.

First, Luminar is building on Skylumpus automatic sky replacement technology by automatically reflecting any new sky onto bodies of water in a “most realistic” way. The update allows the application to automatically conform to the angle and depth of the scene to produce the results that Skylum says are “incredible down to the smallest details.”

Additionally, Sky AI will relight scenes to produce a more realistic scene, eliminating strong color casts form the sky on foreground objects and impvoes the discrete control over the amount of saturation on relighting enhancements. The company also added a “Relight Human” control to improve how people match any new sky for a more “realistic” effect.

Below are a few before and after examples that Luminar provided to show what to expect.

Luminar now has new controls for rotation and horizontal offset which join existing controls that allow for new skies to be flipped, rotated, and positioned.

Transformable texture overlays have been added via Local Masking, and the Texture tool now offers advanced controls to transform texture and image overlays. Speaking of image overlays, PNG files with transparency can now be uploaded as textures, and these files can then be used to add effects to photos including watermarks, text, and decorative elements. New overlay elements can be easily moved, flipped, rotated, and resized as well.

Skylum has also beefed up its Templates experience with a better workflow, easier browsing, and marketplace integration.

Finally, Update 2 brings support for new cameras (below) and file formats like RAF and lossy compressed CR3 files.

New camera support: Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, EOS 850D, EOS-1D X Mark III (lossy compressed files), Fujifilm X-S10, Leica M10-R, S3, SL2-S, Nikon Z 5, Z 6 II, Z 7 II, Olympus E-M10 Mark IV, Panasonic DC-G100 / G110, DC-S5, Sony Alpha 7C, Sony Alpha 7S III, and the Zeiss ZX1.

The Luminar AI Update 2 is available today for all current Luminar users on both Windows and MacOS.
