Last week, we wrote that Nikon was tooting its own horn by claiming that both the D4 and D800 DSLRs had passed the European Broadcasting Union test, popularly known as the BBC test, making them the “first DSLR cameras fit for broadcast.” Now it appears that the horns were tooted prematurely, as the BBC is refuting Nikon’s interpretation of the tests.

Well, that was abrupt. On Tuesday, we wrote that the Nikon D4 that Usain Bolt had famously used after winning an Olympic gold medal was up for auction on eBay, with the proceeds going toward educational and cancer research charities. After the story was reported worldwide, the high bid quickly rose until it hit $11,600 today. Then suddenly, it was gone.

Usain Bolt ran beyond the boundaries of sports and made headlines in the world of photography earlier this year at the London Olympics. After winning yet another gold in his 200m race, he ran over to Scandinavian newspaper photographer Jimmy Wixtröm, grabbed his Nikon D4, and began shooting some awesome photographs of what he was experiencing.

Wixtröm just sent us an email with some neat news: the famous D4 is now being auctioned with the proceeds going to charity.

Nikon Releases a Firmware Update to Fix the D4 and D800 Lock Up Issue d4 mini

In early March, Nikon offered a temporary fix to a lock up issue that had been plaguing the D4 and D800. At the time you had to turn off the ‘Highlights’ and ‘RGB Histogram’ display options to avoid the issue, but Nikon promised a more permanent fix was in the works. Good news, the fix is finally here in the form of Firmware Update B:1.01.

Besides fixing the lock up issue, the new update also offers solutions to a few other bugs including unexpected changes to aperture and exposure compensation when using certain custom settings and RAW files not being network transferrable when in JPEG only mode. After receiving several complaints from professional and private sources alike, Nikon has finally stepped forward to admit to and address the reported “lock up” issue with its new D4 and D800 DSLRs. The issue, which Nikon maintains only affects “a small number of D4/D800 users,” causes both cameras to lock up unexpectedly and up until now could only be “fixed” by removing and reinserting the battery. Nikon’s new flagship D4 DSLR and its cousin the D800 were both designed by famed Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his studio Italdesign Giugiaro. The studio’s website has put up portfolio entries for both cameras. The partnership was rumored prior to the launch and wasn’t much of a surprise: Giugiaro has been involved in the design of nearly all the high end pro Nikon cameras that have been released since 1980.
