More and more camera companies are giving their products vintage camera-inspired designs these days, and Pentax wants to join in on the fun. The company announced its own retro-styled camera earlier today called the MX-1.

Reviews of the new entry-level full-frame Canon 6D DSLR are starting to make their ways onto the Web. While most reviewers seem to agree that the still image quality of the camera is quite good, the camera appears to suffer from a horrible moiré pattern problem. Gizmodo created the comparison test above pitting the 6D against the 5DMk3, and writes in their review:
All signs pointed toward the 6D sharing the same great video quality of the 5D MK3. The thing that the 5D3 does so well—that no other DSLR has accomplished—is reducing moire patterns (rainbow-like bands along detailed surfaces). But the 6D fails where the 5D3 prevailed. Moire is rampant. This single failure ruins the 6D as a viable alternative to the 5D3 for professional video.
If you’ve been eyeing the 6D, you might want to look elsewhere if solid video recording performance is a must-have for you.

‘Tis the season of mergers, acquisitions, and investments. At around the same time Adobe announced its acquisition of Behance yesterday, Taiwanese gadget manufacturer Foxconn (officially known as Hon Hai Precision) announced that it has snatched up 8.88% of GoPro for $200 million. The deal values the California-based action-camera maker at a whopping $2.25 billion.

In yet another business move no doubt influenced by the rise of the all-mighty smartphone camera, a “source familiar with the plan” has told Reuters that Panasonic aims to sell camera and battery manufacturer Sanyo to a Japanese equity fund by the end of March.

Hong Kong-based design group Carbon has created a novelty digital camera called the One Mini, which is designed to look just like a pocket-sized version of Polaroid’s iconic SX-70 One Step instant camera.

During the earlier days of 35mm film photography, many of the popular cameras had distinct design elements that defined the look of that period — the things that come to mind when people hear the words “vintage 35mm camera”: a shiny body seemingly crafted out of a single chunk of metal; a textured covering that gives the camera style and grip; all the manual controls you need, placed in well-thought-out locations at your fingertips.
When cameras started becoming smarter and more automated, many of the convenient physical controls began to disappear. By the time cameras started becoming digital, the consumer market had become flooded with designs that looked nothing like cameras of old and more like the computers that were taking over the world.

Many of Canon’s announcements as of late have been for its full frame DSLRs, but the company hasn’t forgotten about all its APS-C customers. It will reportedly be refocusing on its EF-S crop sensor gear at the beginning of next year, with announcements of new lenses and a DSLR.
