Capturing the Incredibly Rare Moonlit Firefall at Yosemite

This is the famous and elusive Horsetail "Firefall" in Yosemite National Park, but unlike every other image you may have seen—taken near sunset around February—the fire effect in this image is caused by moonlight. That's the only possible way one could see the firefall and stars at the same time.

Mountain Biking At Night, Shot Under Moonlight with the Sony a7S II

Photographer Justin Olsen of Salt Lake City, Utah, recently visited a mountain biking trail at night with Cody Kelley, the world's 39th ranked rider. While Kelley did runs and jumps, Olsen shot video entirely by moonlight using the Sony a7S II. The 1-minute Red Bull video above is what resulted.

How to Use Moonlight as Your Main Light Source

Using the moon as your main light source for late-night photography can be beautiful, surreal... and challenging. But photographer Karl Taylor has a neat trick up his sleeve that can save you hours worth of test shooting in this situation—the trick is called "math."

‘Refuge’: The First Narrative Film Shot with Moonlight at ISO 51,200

The short film above, titled 'Refuge,' is the world's first narrative short film that was filmed entirely with moonlight. Director Sam Shapson shot the entire 7-minute story using the powerful little Sony A7s at ISO 51,200.

"On an off-world biosphere, biological researchers suspect their newly developed ecosystems may be adapting in unexpected ways," the tagline says. (Warning: the film contains very strong language and violence.)

Capturing Big Sur Under Moonlight: Testing the Sony A7s with 4K at ISO 40,000

Photographer Justin Majeczky wanted to test the 4K low-light capabilities of the Sony A7s for a short film he's planning to shoot this summer, so he took the camera and an Atomos Shogun out to the Big Sur coastline of California in the dead of night to see what the camera could do under moonlight. The video above was captured at ISO 40,000.

The Modernist Houses of Palm Springs Photographed Under a Full Moon

If you do a search for photos of Palm Springs online, the vast majority of the results will show the city basked in the rays of Southern California sunshine. Photographer Tom Blachford wanted to take a different approach. For his project Midnight Modern, Blachford photographed the modernist homes of the resort city under only the light of a full moon.

Sony A7s Video Shot Using Only Moonlight Looks Like it Was Captured at Dawn

It's no mystery that the Sony A7s kicks every other camera's butt handily when it comes to low-light shooting, but just how capable is it? And what's the creative potential of this sort of capability? Both of those questions are answered quite impressively in the aptly-titled 'Moonlight,' shot with the A7s using only moonlight.

African Migrants Looking for Cell Signal by Moonlight Wins World Press Photo 2013

Last year's World Press Photo of the Year award went to a controversial image of a funeral procession in Gaza, City. This year's winning photo doesn't strike the same tragic nerve as last year's, and yet it makes such a powerful statement about technology and our global community that we immediately understood why it took home the top prize.

Moonlight Photographs by a Nocturnal Photographer

Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg started as a photojournalist before turning to documentary photography and developing his trademark style of shooting under moonlight and using strobes and long exposures to illuminate his subjects. His portrait subjects are asked to remain motionless for long periods of time as he photographs them using a large format film camera. He recently applied his style to a series on residents of Northern Kenya -- a location that's typically photographed under the harsh midday sun.
