Reviewer Consensus

Strong

The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro is a robust, weather-sealed prime lens that offers impressive sharpness and high-end build quality at a competitive price point. While it delivers excellent optical performance for most users, its significant weight and softness when shooting wide open may be drawbacks for those prioritizing portability or edge-to-edge perfection.

The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 Z Pro confirms what we've already seen in the E-mount version of this lens. It's impressive, but it has its flaws.

The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 FE Pro is an impressive lens in many ways, but it's not flawless. In terms of sharpness, it is up there with the best, though.

On Nikon, however, the Z-mount version is a clear upgrade over the Nikkor Z 50mm F1.4 that I own, so I’ll probably move the Nikkor and invest in another Nikon lens instead. I really loved the lens on my Z8, finding the performance and optics a great fit for the Nikon sensor.

If your priority is optical performance (and value), you will be delighted by this lens, but if your priority is to travel light, well, have you considered the Viltrox AF 50mm F2?

It's generally a nice optic to work with which offers very decent results for the money you're paying. Although it's certainly surprisingly big and heavy.

Viltrox continues to step up its game, and their latest lenses offer a very good balance of cost v’s performance. While there is nothing that makes the lens stand out, it is a solid offering.

Viltrox is releasing a lot of lenses lately and because some of them are amazing (e.g. the 35mm 1.2 LAB or the 14mm 4.0 Air) that definitely raised the bar of expectations for new releases and that can make the “only” very good ones look worse than they actually are.

It feels entirely natural swapping back and forth between the two lenses and, like the 85mm, the newer 50mm delivers superb image quality and all-round performance, along with truly pro-grade build quality and handling. It’s an absolute bargain at the price.

It’s a ‘pro’ style lens through and through, with image quality and all-round performance to match. And at the price, this Viltrox lens is a real bargain.

If you don't need absolute edge-to-edge perfection and especially if you're shooting mostly photo, the Viltrox represents a really smart value for money option.
