Reviewer Consensus

Good

The Sony RX1R III is a remarkably compact full-frame camera that delivers high-resolution 61-megapixel image quality in a highly portable form factor. While it excels as an everyday carry for photographers prioritizing size and performance, its high price, lack of image stabilization, and fixed screen limit its appeal as a versatile professional tool.

What the Reviewers Say

All 29 expert reviews, weighted into the PixelMeter score.

  • PetaPixel 6.5/10

It doesn't deliver amazing value for the dollar, and I think the upgrades should have been more substantial, but all the charm of the cameras that came before are carried forward in the RX1R III.

  • DPReview 88/100

It's an expensive camera and there are cheaper models with more features, but it's hard to think of a photographers' compact that takes better images so readily.

This means it promises stunning image quality to match any full-frame camera in a body that, if exactly not pocketable, will certainly fit into a small bag. It’s not hard to see where the attraction lies – indeed on paper, it looks like one of the best Sony cameras.

  • Digital Camera World

The Sony RX1R III is the most compelling compact camera on the market. Yes, there are drawbacks – the fixed screen being the biggest one for me – but its strengths are such that I would be perfectly happy using this as my everyday snapper or travel camera.

  • Tom's Guide

As lovable and characterful as the RX1R III may be, its price is frankly ludicrous, especially given its disappointing EVF and poor battery life. [...] Simply put: the RX1R III is a very good camera, but is far too pricey to earn a higher score.

The RX1R III is an incredible camera, capable of capturing stunning photos. However, for something Sony waited nearly a decade to update and is charging $5,100 for, it also feels like a missed opportunity.

  • CNET 8.6/10

It’s a real oddball of a product but for a very specific person it might be perfect. [...] The RX1R III is smaller yet heavier than you’d expect.

They're going for this because it is tiny and their imperative to have it as small and light as possible makes all of those compromises worthwhile.

  • Photography News 85/100

It shines as an everyday carry, with razor-sharp files and fast autofocus in a pocketable form. But no IBIS, a fixed screen and a high price go against it.

I absolutely adore the Sony RX1R iii, and it certainly ranks among the most enjoyable cameras I've ever tested. The performance it delivers in this form factor is genuinely remarkable [...]

Sony’s latest luxury compact absolutely delivers on image quality, but the RX1R III is ruinously expensive and lacks features that make rivals so much more fun to use. Fans of wallet-busting compact cameras probably have TikTok to thank for the RX1R III.

It is an amazing camera just like its predecessor was. It is a camera that I think tries to compromise as little as possible over its bigger brother, the A7R V.

The RX1 RIII is a great little camera if you need a great little camera. Less expensive but bigger cameras can be even greater; the RX1 RIII is a luxury item for the accomplished, not a tool for someone who worries about stabilization or prices.

All right, jokes aside though, this is kind of the crux of the argument of why the A7CR is honestly just kind of a better camera in almost every single way.

After taking this to the Tetons and shooting over 1500 photos with it, while I think much of the criticism is unfounded, unfortunately, I'm left a little bit disappointed.

  • mpb.com

The Sony RX1R III is a beautiful, very tiny camera, but the missing features are hard to ignore: no IBIS, no weather sealing and no tilting screen. I don’t think this is an easy camera to recommend across the board.

If photo resolution, the ability to print your photos, and file quality matter, then this camera is easily worth $5,100. If you use the camera for assignments that generate income, and can capture images you otherwise would miss, the price tag might even seem reasonable.
