The Nikon ZR is a compact, full-frame cinema camera that pairs RED RAW recording and 32-bit float audio with a bright 4-inch display, offering significant value for filmmakers. While it delivers impressive image quality and professional features in a portable body, the design suffers from ergonomic limitations and a lack of traditional cinema-grade connectivity.

I think if you ignore the ergonomics and just focus on the fact that this $2,200 camera can record RED RAW internally at 9.1 milliseconds up to 6K60, I'd have to admit that that seems really compelling.

It's a camera that grows on you as you adjust to it. The good news is that the ZR is no slouch in function or performance for still photography and it’s a top performer for video. In the right hands, the ZR is going to produce amazing results.

[...] Nikon have certainly come out swinging with the new ZR Z Cinema camera, in our view hitting a home run that is hopefully just the first of many such models.

This is a Red camera in Nikon clothing. It's a Red camera for anybody to use, and that is a fantastic thing.

If you’re looking for a camera that can handle long-form video, has a beautifully bright and large screen, and has a ton of lens options, there are few that can do what the Nikon ZR can do, even with its caveats.

For whatever criticisms there might be like the viewfinder or the card slots or whatever, it's really easy to overlook that considering this price. It really is quite a deal that isn't matched at the moment.

I honestly think this is the first camera since the A7S3 launch that I'm like, do I need to switch? Even though it's a it's like a huge pain in the butt and like new lenses and everything, but this thing is very interesting.

This is a a really interesting and intriguing camera. And I think at $2,200, they're going to sell a lot of these because I think a lot of people are just curious about Nikon and I've always maybe wanted to buy a Red.

[W]ho exactly is this camera being aimed at? I believe it has two main audiences: those working with RED cameras who are invested in the RED workflow, who might be looking for a relatively affordable B or C cam.

  • [T]he ZR does a great job, and all of those features may be nice to have, but they're not enough for me to make me trade in my Z9 or my other Nikon and non-Nikon cameras that we have back here. Those bodies are just more flexible for the way that I work.
