Camp Snap CS-8 Mini Brings Super 8 Retro Video Vibes to Smaller Hands

Camp Snap is looping back around to its original target market with a miniaturized version of the CS-8 camcorder it launched last year that more easily fits into a child’s hand. The CS-8 Mini is less than half the size of the original and is designed specifically to cater to kids.

The company’s original target market for the first Camp Snap camera was kids at camp—hence the name—though in recent years it expanded to appeal to a broader, adult audience. Today, the company is returning to its roots with the CS-8 Mini.

Four children sit around a small green table playing with toy cameras, microphones, and colorful sponges, while a fifth child stands nearby.

“Reimagined at less than half the size of the original, the compact, screen-free camcorder is designed for smaller hands and bigger adventures, encouraging kids to capture the world around them rather than consume content on a screen,” the company says.

Four colorful toy cameras, a white microphone with headphones, a small basket of play food, and two plastic blocks sit on a lime green table.

“Ready to use straight out of the box, the CS-8 Mini combines easy point-and-shoot recording with five film-inspired filters, four aspect ratios, 8x digital zoom, and built-in audio recording. With no playback screen, Wi-Fi, or apps required, young creators can focus on making memories in the moment and reliving them later.”

A light green table and chairs set holds three toy cameras, two microphones, a pair of headphones, and a film clapperboard.

This new, smaller version of the camera measures 6.0 × 5.6 × 2.0 inches and weighs a scant 0.58 pounds (262 grams).

There really isn’t much different about this camera compared to its larger predecessor. It features the same general design aesthetic, five built-in film filters, four aspect ratios, and a trigger-pull recording style that Camp Snap says is inspired by classic 8mm camcorders. Audio is captured via an integrated microphone, and footage is stored via internal memory that can be accessed via USB-C.

It's not entirely identical to the original CS-8, though. The company says that the retro-inspired battery and storage indicators have been redesigned to fit the Mini's compact body, making it easy to monitor remaining power and recording space.

Another difference is the color options: the CS-8 Mini is available in blue, green, orange, and pink. The standard CS-8 debuted in black, which isn't even an option for this kid-focused model.

The Camp Snap CS-8 Mini is available starting today directly from Camp Snap's website and at Target for $150. For those keeping score, Camp Snap's original CS-8, which is twice as big, launched for that same price.

Do kids (or anyone) really need these? That's a debate the PetaPixel team discussed on this week's podcast.
