A glitzy award ceremony took place last night at the Royal Lancaster in London, where the category winners and People’s Choice Awards were handed out.

Winner of the Macro category. At the end of its life, a puffball fungus (Basidiomycota) produces a spherical fruiting body with an opening at the top. When it is mature, any impact causes it to release a cloud of thousands of spores which are carried away on the air currents to germinate elsewhere. Two flashguns were triggered by the shutter release to capture the spores in the air. Photo by Claire Waring.
