AstrHori’s 8mm f/2.4 Medium Format Fisheye Has an Expansive Field of View

AstrHori has launched a new manual focus fisheye lens for medium-format mirrorless cameras. The AstrHori MF 8mm f/2.4 Fisheye for Fujifilm GFX/Hasselblad XCD is a new circular fisheye with a whopping 220-degree field of view.

The AstrHori 8mm f/2.4 Fisheye lens has 10 all-glass optical elements arranged across eight groups, including a pair of low-dispersion elements and two HR elements. The lens has a 10-bladed aperture diaphragm, promising pleasing sunstars.

The company says its new fisheye lens is useful for a wide range of photographic applications, though circular fisheye photography is generally niche. It’s not a versatile lens suited to many scenarios.

AstrHori touts the lens for landscape, architecture, street, and astrophotography, as well as dynamic action and portrait photography. While the manual focus design could limit the lens’s utility for certain applications, it surely has an expansive depth of field, even at f/2.4. The lens can focus as close as 0.1 meters (0.33 feet).

The new fisheye lens is surprisingly compact and lightweight. The lens is just 62 millimeters (2.44 inches) long and weighs 517 grams (18.2 ounces). It has an all-metal design, per AstrHori.

Neither Fujifilm nor Hasselblad makes native fisheye lenses for their mirrorless systems. However, several third-party options are already on the market. Venus Optics makes the Laowa 8-15mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens, for example, which has a similarly fast aperture but a narrower 180-degree field of view. It’s a circular fisheye lens at 8mm and a diagonal one at 15mm, giving the lens a bit more flexibility. It’s $699.

Although it’s no longer listed for sale, TTArtisan did make an 11mm f/2.8 fisheye lens for GFX. It launched in 2021 for just $215.

On the Hasselblad side, Laowa’s 8-15mm f/2.8 fisheye zoom lens is also an option. There’s also a classic Hasselblad 30mm f/3.5 fisheye lens for V-Mount that can be adapted for use on the X1D and X2D series cameras. It’ll set photographers back, though. It’s not cheap on the used market.
