Cameras, lenses, curry, ragù, and now… gloves. OM System feeds and clothes photographers. The company is one tent product launch away from hitting all the key survival requirements.

Jokes aside, the new OM System x Foxfire Octamitten Gloves look compelling for photographers who want to stay undeterred in harsh winter weather. The new gloves, reported by Digital Camera Watch, can transform into mittens thanks to a flap, promising to keep the wearer’s hands and fingers comfortable in frigid temps.

As photographers in cold climates know all too well, manipulating a camera’s buttons and controls while wearing gloves can be tricky, but thin gloves don’t always keep digits warm. The OM System x Foxfire Octamitten Gloves seek to deliver the best of both worlds.

The default configuration features relatively thin gloves, which are then covered up when needed by the mitten attachment. A secondary thumb cover can also be removed to make it easier to use the command dials and touchscreen. If needed, fingers can be entirely exposed, leaving just the palm covered.

The outer fabric uses abrasion-resistant Cordura, while the inner lining offers flexibility, heat retention, and breathability. The palm features microfleece with small rubber dots for improved grip.

The gloves-slash-mittens also have two pockets. An upper pocket near the mitten hood can store a heat warmer packet, a must-have for photographers in cold climates. Then there’s a second lower pocket near the wrist that can hold up to a 72mm lens cap, which covers most of OM System’s own lenses plus many lens caps for other companies’ optics.

As Foxfire’s parent company, Timco, explains, “The goal was to create gloves that allow you to concentrate on shooting and never miss a photo opportunity, even in wintery conditions.”

This is not the first time OM System has worked with Foxfire on a product. The two companies also collaborated on a trash pouch that hikers can use to store waste during outdoor adventures.

The OM System x Foxfire Octamitten gloves are available in Japan now for 11,680 yen, or about $74 at current exchange rates. The product is likely not destined for launch elsewhere.
