Tamron has announced that its compact, fast-aperture 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD standard zoom lens is coming soon to Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras.

The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062) was released for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras back in late 2022, arriving as the smallest and lightest lens in its class. Arriving over four years later, the Z-mount version remains extremely portable, weighing just 380 grams (13.4 ounces) and measuring only 88.7 millimeters (3.5 inches) long. The weather-sealed lens accepts Tamron’s favorite filter size: 67mm.

The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 promises to be a top-notch landscape lens thanks to its especially wide starting focal length of 20mm, which delivers a field of view of 94°30′. Tamron also notes that this wide-angle field of view and the lens’s compact form factor make it a compelling choice for video applications as well, including vlogging.

“Starting at 20mm, the ultra-wide setting captures dynamic landscapes with a powerful sense of depth, while the 40mm end is perfect for everyday snapshots and portraits,” Tamron says. The company notes that on APS-C cameras, like the Nikon Zfc and Z50 series, the 20-40mm f/2.8 delivers a 30-60mm equivalent focal length.

The lens features Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) autofocus system, promising fast, precise, and quiet focusing. It can focus as close as 0.17 meters (6.7 inches) at 20mm, which is a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8 on full-frame cameras.

A person seen from behind holds a camera on a small tripod grip, facing the lens toward themselves to view their reflection on the flip-out screen.

The lens incorporates 12 elements arranged across 11 groups and features a nine-bladed circular aperture diaphragm. It includes four low-dispersion elements, two glass-molded aspherical lenses, and one hybrid aspherical element. Tamron promises high image quality throughout the focal length range, even when shooting wide open at f/2.8.

No other lens quite like the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is available for full-frame Nikon Z-mount cameras. Nikon’s 14-30mm f/4 S lens ($1,246.95) offers a slightly wider focal length across the board but with a slower f/4 constant aperture. Tamron’s own 12-20mm f/2.8 is very different, although it certainly is a compelling complement to its 20-40mm f/2.8 zoom lens. Nikon has a Nikkor Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 ($446.95) kit lens with a roughly similar focal length range, albeit with less field of view at the wide end. However, that lens is significantly slower. The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 is truly one of a kind in the Z-mount ecosystem.
