Sigma has launched new teasers of its upcoming 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports lens, which will be “coming soon” to full-frame E-mount and L-Mount cameras.

Sigma announced that the 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens was in development earlier this month, but did not reveal any technical specifications at that time.

In a series of posts on social media, Sigma Japan has divulged some basic information about the lens, including its optical makeup and physical dimensions.

The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports lens will include 20 elements across 15 groups, including six FLD, two SLD, and three aspherical lens elements. Compared to Sigma’s existing 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens for DSLR cameras, the new mirrorless lens includes four fewer elements and seven fewer groups.

It is not the only aspect of the lens that has been reduced. The new mirrorless lens shrinks the front filter thread from 82mm to 77mm. There is a corresponding reduction in overall size, at least in one dimension. The DSLR version is 3.71 inches (94.2 millimeters) at its maximum diameter and 7.99 inches (202.9mm) long.

The new DG DN OS Sports zoom is 3.6 inches (90.6mm) at its widest and is actually longer at 8.1 inches (205mm). The E-mount version is very slightly longer at 207mm.

In terms of weight, the L-Mount version weighs 47.4 ounces (1,345 grams), while the E-mount version weighs 47.1 ounces (1,335g). The EF version of the older 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom for DSLR cameras weighs a hefty 63.5 ounces (1,800g), so even though the mirrorless zoom is a little longer than its DSLR counterpart, it is significantly lighter.

How does the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN lens compare to other 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses for mirrorless cameras? For reference, the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II lens weighs 36.9 ounces (1,045g). The Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S lens is very similar in weight to Sigma’s upcoming lens, tipping the scales at 48 ounces (1,360g). The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM is nearly as light as Sony’s zoom, weighing 37.7 ounces (1,070g).

As for another 70-200mm f/2.8 for L-Mount cameras, the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 OIS lens, well, Sigma’s option is much lighter. At 55.4 ounces (1,570g), Panasonic’s lens is a heavyweight for mirrorless cameras.

There is still much that remains unknown about Sigma’s 70-200m f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports lens, including its price and availability. Hopefully, Sigma will share more details soon, as its upcoming telephoto zoom will undoubtedly prove popular with photographers.
