Last week, AsobiNet reported that some specialty camera stores in Japan had listed the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens for Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount as discontinued.

However, Sigma America has released a statement saying that these reports are incorrect:

Last week we learned that several websites were reporting that the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens for Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount has been discontinued. We want to assure you that this is not the case. The simple fact of the matter is that the lens is currently on back order in the Japanese market due to high worldwide demand because of its total performance and competitive pricing.

Sigma tells PetaPixel that when there is official information to share concerning new products, discontinuations, special promotions, and updates, Sigma will contact its working partners directly.

At United States retailers like Adorama, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens is available now for E-Mount and temporarily back ordered for L-Mount. Adorama expects the L-Mount version to be back in stock in early October.

At B&H, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens is in stock in both E and L-Mount options.

While it is always possible that Sigma is playing some of its cards close to the vest, as all companies do, the company’s statement about the 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens seems quite convincing.

Although Sigma’s statement puts a positive spin on the stock issue in Japan, saying that the lens is too popular to keep readily in stock, it is not unusual for lenses to be temporarily on back order. A lens being out of stock certainly does not indicate that it has been discontinued.

That said, it can take a very long time for companies to discontinue products officially, and sometimes, products are never discontinued despite not being produced. For example, last month, Canon finally discontinued its SD Card Wi-Fi adapter, a product released in 2016.

Hasselblad discontinued its H-system cameras earlier this year, after last updating the line in 2016 with the H6D system.

All that is to say that reports of the end of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens were inaccurate, per Sigma. For now, the lens, which is only a few years old, remains available. It is a good thing, too, as PetaPixel‘s review in 2020 found that the lens offers impressive performance at a fantastic price.
