For the first time in the nine-year history of the Magnum Square Print Sale, Magnum photographers have invited a “diverse group of artists, filmmakers, and fellow photographers” to join them in the new Square Print Sale, which started today and runs through April 23, 2023.

Joining Magnum photographers and estates for the Square Print sale are Weegee, Roger Deakins, Alfredo Jaar, Hannah Reyes Morales, Larry Sultan, Judd Apatow, and more.

“We are opening the doors and inviting our long-time friends to join the conversation. The invitation is just a formality, as the photography family has always shared a house — a house that is busy, and in constant renovation. As a family, we are now, once again, looking at the future with more questions than answers,” explains Cristina de Middel, Magnum Photos president.

The Square Print sale’s theme is Vital Signs, and it’s the third and final part of the Then. Now. Next. triptych that began last May as part of Magnum’s 75th-anniversary celebrations.

Prior curations have reflected on the past and raised questions concerning the present. The new curation “looks to the future — a musing on the hopes, fears, and anticipation of things to come,” explains Magnum.

Many of the selected images focus on the next generation. For example, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, the inaugural recipient of the John Kobal Foundation Fellowship, has chosen a photo of a young boy from Johannesburg, South Africa taking a break in the fields.

“Photographers have built the visual chronology of who we were and who we are today. For those who we will be, the journey ahead is one that we are not ready to do alone. It will be a long road, and for that, we need as many skilled and diverse travelers as we can get,” De Middel concludes.

Each print is made on archival paper, and the image size is 5.5 inches on the longest dimension. Images are not cropped and instead include white borders. The images are not editioned by quantity but are instead limited by the time they’re available. Like prior Magnum Square Print sales, the images will never be available in this format again.
