ZY Optics Unveils 20mm f/2 4.5x, a Super Affordable ‘Super Macro Lens’

Macro photography on the cheap usually involves reverse lensing or buying some affordable extension tubes for your kit. But what if there was an extreme macro lens out there that was also extremely affordable? Enter the ZY Optics 20mm f/2 4.5x Super Macro Lens.

The Super Macro, as its lens implies, is all about extreme magnification, boasting a 4.5:1 reproduction ratio right out of the box. Slap on a bellows or some extension tubes and you can get that ratio all the way up to 13:1.

The lens is designed with 6 glass elements in 4 groups, weighs just 0.5lbs (230g) and is only 2.3-inches (6cm) long. Those are the positives. On the negative end, you’re missing a filter thread, have only 3 aperture blades to speak of, and you’re missing infinity focus.

This is a super compact, super simple, Super Macro Lens that also, it turns out, is super affordable. Quality from the 20mm Super Macro won’t keep up with the expensive Canon and Nikon macro lenses out there, that much we’re convinced of; but unlike those lenses, this one will only cost you $200 brand new.

Here are some sample images captured with the “Super” macro lens so you can see what 4.5:1 looks like:
