That Explains It: Canon vs. Nikon Debate Linked to Self-Esteem

Ever wonder why certain people always seem to engage in meaningless Canon vs Nikon vs et al. camera brand debates at every opportunity? A recent study conducted at the University of Illinois has found that the more knowledge and experience you have with a particular brand, the stronger your self-esteem is tied to it. Ars Technica writes,

Those who had high self-brand connections (SBC)—that is, those who follow, research, or simply like a certain brand—were the ones whose self esteem suffered the most when their brands didn’t do well or were criticized. Those with low SBC remained virtually unaffected on a personal level.

The residual effect of this is that those with high SBCs tend to discount negative news about their favorite brands, and sometimes even ignore it altogether in favor of happier thoughts.

So that’s why feathers are so easily ruffled when camera brands are bashed…

Not true by far. I am a professional photographer, a pretty famous one too. And all highend photographers either use medium format w dig backs or canon. The tonality of both is much better than nikon. Nikon has problems with banding and color moire, when shooting fashion. From Anne to me, we all shoot Canon. When nikon has the best camera we will shoot nikon. For now the Canon 5D mark 2 is the best out there as far as image quality and color tonality. So much better than anything else that we all put up with it’s bad autofucus. And believe me it sucks. But the image quality is so amazing I never touch my hassy anymore. So I don’t know where u got your research from but I am pretty sure u just made it up. Although anyone who every made any money from photography can call themselves a professional photographer.

@ Darrinvg Your not a Professional at all, Do you ever listen to yourself? You are acting like big baby. Any Pro would not tell others which brand to use. You know for a fact, Nikon, Canon and Sony all are on top, as image quality is concerned. You don’t have to do much research to come to this conclusion. So sir get out of your small circle and look around.

What makes a photographer it’s the eye, not the camera!

I guess I don’t understand. I definitely prefer certain brands for very specific reasons, and dislike others for specific reasons as well. However, if someone disagrees with me, I don’t give a s***. It doesn’t change what I think about my decisions, or what I think of the other person. Ultimately, these devices are just tools. I have no emotional connection to them, but in a way  they are an extension of how I work.

Nikon v Canon. I prefer Nikon because of the ergonomics and optics. I love the images, and I love the control layout, and how it feels in the hands. Canon might have better tech specs, but I don’t care. If you prefer Canon and despise Nikon, I don’t care. If you call me a fool for disagreeing with you, I don’t care. My tools allow me to work, and your opinion serves no purpose to me.

Not sure why people take this personally.

This Canon vs. Nikon debate reminds me of the obama drones vs. obama=anti Christ.

“a pretty famous one too” I’ve only just stopped laughing at your post :) Thank you I needed that this morning :) Brilliant!!

Just for the record. Go to any sporting or press event and look at who uses what camera. You’ll see that the older more seasoned shooters use Nikon and the newer photographers use Canon and and most of the newer ones got into it at a time when for a little while Canon had the edge before Nikon brought in the D3.

Then go to DXOMark.com the look at how poorly Canon stack up. Your best camera scores only as good as a D7000 :)

You talk like an amateur, a noob. According to you a pretty famous noob :)

    I’d rather have a Pentax K5

Wow. I guess reading comprehension is not one of your strengths. I am stating as far as image quality which can be subjective, Canon 5D m2 is the best dslr out there right now. I have full gear of nikon and canon. I got the Nikon 3Dx because of it’s amazing resolution when it first came out, only to find that with fashion it creates too many digital artifacts to use with fashion. I keep all my nikon and canon gear so when the next best camera comes out I will be ready to use it. Most dslr cameras now are more than capable of creating a great image. But if you got a client putting up 30 grand for a shoot, or even 5, you can not take chances. Anti aliasing filters have a big effect on controling dig artifacts. Sometimes depending on the clothing I use medium format (dig backs) because of their ability not to create banding.
Just as of now almost all highend photographers doing commercial work are using the 5D m2 if they are shooting 35mm dslr. Whatever is the best camera for the job will be the one used. And I think if your only job is photography and you make well into the 6 figures with it, you might be a professional.

A true photographer will defend their chosen tool to the death, no matter what they are using. Such is the way.  But if you are crazy enough to bash the other guy’s tool in the process of defending your own choice – well, you probably have a lack of confidence in the quality of content you’re creating. Go shoot some pictures and get over it.

I was on Nikon since I was a kid and recently go into Canon as well. They each have their benefits and a good lens adapter can make the duality of lens systems moot.

  • JP de Ruiter

There are only two things that the canon vs. nikon debate proves: a) free market competition sometimes really works, and in this case has lead to absolutely fantastic cameras, and b) anyone buying a Leica is an idiot (unless they do not want to make pictures, but want to show off how much money they have).

Once you’ve bought a few good lenses for either brand, you’ve invested so much that it probably is not worth switching, so who cares? Go and get a life, or even better, go and make good photographs!

    Ha, Ha, Ha….
They are so worthless these tests. I just wonder why Leica pics are better than Nikon and Canon.
