Someone must’ve heard my birthday was just around the corner, because from now through most of the month of May, Canon, Nikon, and Sony all have incredible deals going on over at B&H. I’ll briefly go over some of the best deals below.
The much-rumored Sony a6000 -- the camera that is replacing both the NEX-6 and NEX-7 -- has finally arrived, and it might just steal your heart with its insanely speedy performance and other impressive specs.
If rumors are true, Sony's a6000 -- the replacement for the NEX-6 and 7 cameras -- will arrive tonight around 11pm Easter Standard Time. Of course, that didn't stop the rumor mill from getting some info ahead of time, so if you want to see some specs and a few pictures, read on. Otherwise check back later tonight.
If recent rumors are to be trusted, Sony is getting ready to continue its assault on all ends of the mirrorless market with the announcement next week of a successor to the mid-line NEX-6 and NEX-7 models -- among other potential announcements.
Sony has announced the new NEX-6, a mirrorless camera that follows up -- and one-ups -- the NEX-5R that was announced a couple of weeks ago. In the NEX pecking order, the 6 falls somewhere in between the 5R and the 7 (announced back in December 2011). It differs from the NEX-7 in that it features a new secondary mode dial and has less resolution (16.1MP, down from 24.3MP), and differs from the NEX-5 in that it has a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder.
Other specs include an APS-C-sized CMOS sensor, ISO that goes up to 25600, a 3-inch tilting LCD screen, a built-in flash, a speedy hybrid AF system, 10fps continuous shooting, and 1080/60p video recording.
We're in the year of the camera's app. Not the camera app, which you use on your phone, but the camera's app, which is found on your camera. A boatload of new cameras this year will have Internet connectivity and app support built right in, giving photographers access to all kinds of custom features and functions that weren't easily available in the old age of cameras.
While Android is one of the big operating systems manufacturers have gravitated towards, Sony has decided to go the Sony way and make its system proprietary. Instead of running Android, the Sony NEX-5R and the NEX-6 will offer apps through the PlayMemories ecosystem.

Although the two cameras were leaked together, Sony's NEX-5R and NEX-6 mirrorless cameras are being announced separately (the Wi-Fi-equipped 5R was announced this past Wednesday). Now, detailed specs for the NEX-6 are emerging ahead of its September 12th announcement. We're also seeing some "sightings" of a second major camera that'll be announced on the same day: the high-end A99 DSLR.
There are some interesting murmurings in the world of camera rumors. Photokina is just around the corner, and if the rumors are to be believed, we'll be seeing some pretty earth-shattering unveilings at the German trade show.
