For most of his projects, Roberts will capture snapshots of the image at various stages of compositing -- glimpses are later combined into animated GIFs that show how the various images were made.

Rephotographing Route 66: Animated GIFs Showing 1930-1970 Scenes Compared to Today
Route 66 is a famous highway that crosses the United States, connecting Santa Monica, California on the west with Chicago, Illinois toward the east. It was one of the original highways of the US Highway System.
The route is also the subject of a project by photographer Natalie Slater, titled "The Mother Road Revisited." Slater found old photos of the route from decades ago and rephotographed them as they appear today.

Echograph, in case you're not familiar with it, is an application that allows you to create animated GIFs, loops and cinemagraphs.

Photographer Jamie Beck has a beautiful series of images that she calls "cinemagraphs". They're animated GIFs in which only a small piece each photograph is animated, making them a neat fusion of still and moving images. It's amazing how much a tiny bit of movement in a still photo can do. They're almost like the moving pictures you see in Harry Potter!
