LumaFusion Can Now Import and Export Animated GIFs

LumaFusion version 4.1 now allows editors to place animated GIFs directly onto a timeline, export any clip as a GIF, and expands the company’s library of transitions.

LumaTouch, the company that develops LumaFusion, last updated its app in April when it added multicam editing to its iOS and iPadOS editing platform.

LumaTouch says that the addition of animated GIF import and export support allows the video editing app to work with other popular digital illustration apps like Procreate. The company adds that editors using LumaFusion can now easily introduce animations and looping GIFs into their edits.

GIFs can be imported directly into LumaFusion and dropped onto the timeline for further editing, which allows editors to create animated, looping content for use across different mediums directly from an iPhone or iPad.

Animated GIF support in video editors is not new, but its availability on mobile devices combined with a high-powered, feature-rich editor is less common. Adobe Premiere Pro natively supports importing and exporting GIFs, which is great for desktop users. Adobe’s mobile editor Rush also supports GIF import and export, but that platform is significantly underpowered compared to Premiere Pro or LumaFusion. Its inclusion here will certainly be welcomed by mobile editors who like a more robust experience.

In addition to the GIF support, LumaFusion version 4.1 also expands the app’s library of transitions with two more: Perspective Turns and Stretches.

LumaTouch describes Perspective Turns as creating a transition in which video turns in a 3D plane, creating what it says is “a fun and visually interesting way to add to a story.”

Stretches literally stretch one sequence into another, which Lumatouch says enables storytellers to add “an exciting dynamic” between them.

The company is including these two new transitions for free along with the GIF support for existing customers via the version 4.1 update.

As a note, the LumaFusion application is also now available on Android devices but comparing the company’s pages shows there might not be feature parity yet. The Google Play store listing makes no mention of animated GIF support or the addition of new transitions and the LumaTouch website doesn’t mention multicam editing for Android either.
