Reviewer Consensus

Strong

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS provides a sharp, versatile telephoto range in a compact, weather-resistant body that is easier to carry than heavier f/2.8 alternatives. While it lacks the low-light performance and shallow depth of field of faster lenses, it remains a reliable, high-performing choice for many photographers.

A great choice if you want a decent telephoto zoom but don’t need an f2.8 focal ratio or a super reach. It’s a lens I reach for whenever shooting action all day long.

The FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens fills an important niche in the Sony lens lineup. Looking for a professional-grade, high-performing Sony telephoto zoom lens that is able to be comfortably carried for long periods of time and doesn't cost a fortune?

The Sony FE 4/70-200 is a jack of many trades but a master of none. For most applications the sharpness is very good, only the corners are a bit softer but still good enough for most applications.

This is a great lens, a high level performer that does the job efficiently. The only slight drawback is the possibility of some flare, but fortunately this does not seem to be a major problem for most photography.

The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS is a sharp zoom lens for Sony's full-frame mirrorless system, although it doesn't deliver the f/2.8 aperture that many photographers desire.

So look, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS, I really like it. I don't really own many of the slightly slower versions of lenses, but for FE mount this is it at the moment, I have to say.

  • Admiring Light

The FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is a high quality telephoto zoom lens that produces sharp images with pleasing bokeh and good color and contrast. The lens focuses very fast and the optical stabilizer allows for an extra two to three stops of handholdability.

[...] I think that it is still the best short to mid-telephoto E-mount lens for traveling and it generally performs very well, which means that I can recommend it.

Sony's done an excellent job of compromising a bit where you generally won't be bothered by it, while keeping the aspects of the lens that you want top notch, well, top notch. Even on the 42mp sensor cameras this lens shines in the center.

If you shoot a lot of portraits and still images, then I do recommend this lens over the 2.8 version because this is much cheaper, you get more bang for the buck, and is really sharp as well.

So if you're a Sony shooter and you're in the market for a 70-200 mil lens, I can definitely recommend the f/4 and I don't think you will be disappointed by it.

It's also got a ring that allows you to switch between landscape and portrait view when it's on your tripod. If you're in the market for a 70-200 lens, I highly recommend this Sony version if you're using a Sony mirrorless E-mount camera because it is so fantastic.
