Shimoda Designs has announced a refresh of its adventure camera backpack system, headlined by the Action X v3. Additionally, the company has a new set of interior core cubes and a brand-new sling bag.
The company says that these updates were driven by feedback that was provided to it directly from professional photographers and the new lineup brings refined sizing, upgraded ergonomics, expanded super-telephoto lens support, and a complete transition to environmentally responsible materials.
The Action X v3 series retains the rugged mountain DNA of its predecessors while introducing upgrades in key areas. The compaby says that the most notable update is the expansion of the side-access door which has been widened by six centimeters, allowing photographers to pull out camera bodies that have long leses attached to them without issues or without having to take the backpack off while in the field.
Shimoda also upgraded the air mesh harness for improved ventilation and comfort, adjusted the laptop sleeve to fit 16-inch computers thanks to a wider opening, updated the Velcro fastening system and visual alignment guides for fast insertion and removal, and added three Peak Design Capture Clip mounting locations as well as added dedicated trekking pole or ice axe mounts, and an integrated hip belt pocket. The company also included a stowable luggage handle, color matched rain cover, and it updated the side pockets (for tripods or water bottles).
The update also includes the new Action X35, a new size that combines the compact height profile of the X30 with the extra depth of the X40. It is designed specifically for photographers with smaller camera bodies and carry-on travelers.
So with this release, the core Action X series now spans five sizes: X25, X30, X35, X40, and X50. Meanwhile, the expedition-grade X70 breaks away from the core Action X line into its own specialized category. To adapt to all these changes, Shimoda also updated its Core Units accordingly.
Shimoda has also announce a new sling it calls the Insider. Designed for days when carrying a full mountain backpack isn’t necessary, the company says it is built for quick assignments and everyday carry. The sling accommodates a non-gripped camera body with two mid-range pro zoom lenses, or a body attached to a 70–200mm or 100–400mm lens.
Finally, in a major sustainability initiative, both the Action X v3 line and the Insider Sling transition entirely to PFAS-free textiles, eliminating persistent fluorinated chemicals from the manufacturing process.
The Action X v3 series backpacks start at $300 while the new Insider Sling is available for $130 (both in a variety of colors) starting today.
