Japan Is Getting Its First DJI x Hasselblad Retail Store

DJI and its Japanese domestic distributor, Sekido Co., Ltd., are opening Japan’s first DJI and Hasselblad Dual-Concept Flagship Store this weekend in Tokyo.

The new DJI | Hasselblad Authorized Concept Store opens in Tokyo this Saturday, October 31, marking a new era for DJI and Hasselblad in Japan. The two-story retail location will let customers get hands-on with and buy DJI products, including drones and cameras, as well as Hasselblad cameras and lenses.

As PetaPixel reported last year, Hasselblad’s newest camera, the 100-megapixel medium-format X2D II 100C, has had unprecedented success in Japan. The camera sold out at many major Japanese photo retailers at launch, which is extremely unusual for a premium camera that costs over a million yen, or around $7,000.

Hasselblad, a legendary Swedish photography brand now owned by DJI, has never really had a strong foothold in Japan. Or, at least, it hadn’t. The X2D II 100C has changed the company’s fortunes in Japan’s photography-loving market. As for DJI, well, its video camera market share in Japan is astronomical, reaching over 70% earlier this year.

It makes sense for DJI and Hasselblad to open a shared retail space in Omotesando, an upscale shopping district in Tokyo.

The store will boast an interesting design with several notable features. It will not only showcase and sell DJI and Hasselblad cameras, but also feature a permanent indoor "Drone Flight Cage" where prospective customers can test drones before buying one. It will offer one-on-one customer service in Japanese, Chinese, and English.

Sekido Co. Ltd. explains that the use of DJI products has "rapidly expanded" in Japan in recent years across numerous segments, including aerial photography, film and video production, still photography, and industrial applications. The company says it wanted to open a dedicated store after many customers told it they wanted to try products hands-on before buying and consult experts when choosing the right gear.

The first floor features DJI products, including the latest drones, handheld gimbals, action cameras, and the indoor drone flight cage. The second floor features a Hasselblad touch-and-try area with medium-format mirrorless cameras and XCD lenses. There's also a Hasselblad art gallery and a premium lounge.

A special ceremony will celebrate the grand opening on Saturday, October 31, including an opening ceremony, a Hasselblad photography event, and limited-edition item giveaways. Some very cool items are up for grabs. Hasselblad cleaning cloths and stickers are fine, but the mascot cat keychains are downright adorable.
