Actress Mia Goth — who recently filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf — has slammed Instagram after the platform let an AI-image of her wearing a t-shirt that read “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN” to go viral.

British actress Goth — who recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey — filed for divorce from LaBeouf on October 6. Although they have been legally married since October 2016, the pair had been in an on-off relationship since 2012.

Two days after Goth filed for divorce, a selfie apparently taken by the actress began to circulate on Instagram posted by an account named “@miagoth_” — complete with the social media platform’s blue verified checkmark. The photo showed Goth wearing a shirt that read “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN” with the Beyoncé song Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) added to the Instagram post.

According to a report by The Verge, hundreds of thousands of people, including some in the entertainment industry, liked the image. Entertainment news outlets such as OK! and People also reported on it as though it were genuine. Screenshots of the photo of Goth — who is particularly well known for her work on Ti West’s horror trilogy X, starring as the lead in Pearl (2022) — were soon circulating widely across other social media platforms.

‘Incomprehensible’

However, the image of Goth was AI-generated. A spokesperson for Goth calls Instagram’s actions in spreading the AI image “incomprehensible” and says they have asked the platform to remove the fake picture.

“Mia Goth does not have ownership of, nor does she engage in social media on any platform. We have filed multiple complaints with Instagram to remove the verified fan account which continues to post counterfeit, AI images of Mia Goth,” Christine Tripicchio, a representative for Goth, tells The Verge. “The fact that this fan account meets Instagram’s criteria to qualify for a ‘blue check’ is disconcerting on a fundamental level. Beyond that, it is incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure’s likeness.”

Since the actress’ comments, Meta spokesperson Alex Dziedzan tells The Verge that the miagoth_ account — which had over one million followers — has now been removed for impersonating a public figure. Although the Instagram account was labeled as fan-run, its blue checkmark may have made it appear official. The badge traditionally indicated that an account was authentic, but Meta later introduced a paid verification system that allowed fan accounts and other pages to obtain blue checkmarks without being run by the people they featured.
